Jerry rigging AS-GR50 GPS to older units?
« on: August 10, 2010, 01:32:14 AM »

Has anyone ever done it?

I understand that power requirement for the GPS is higher than older HB units can support, but can we connect the GPS directly to battery with in-line fuse? I read through the NMEA diy cable article and saw the red (power?) cable in the GPS pig tail, which makes me wonder if this is the power supply to the unit.

On another note. Does the GPS puck supply NMEA data to the head unit? I thought the signal would be in some raw format (rockwell whatever.. I think) direct to the head unit rather than NMEA.

Looking forward to your informed input.

Yes in theory a GR50 could be rigged to work with one of the older units.  You would have to supply power on the correct wire and it should work.  I believe that you can use the Red wire that is on the pigtail for this.  Just remember to fuse it (the GPS Receiver does not pull that much current so even a 1 amp fuse will be too big for it).

The GPS Receiver sends NMEA 0183 data to the unit.
