Title: What to use for Power at home !!
Post by: Llunker on February 23, 2010, 07:17:29 AM
Hey guys,

Thought i would ask what you guys use to power up at  home?  I have tried using a ac-dc convertor(cut off the end and tried to spice wires on) to 12vdc and it didnt work.  I hooked it to my car battery on my truck and it worked fine.

ANy suggestions?  I was told by a BBC member to buy a 12v Jump start pack(if so any suggestion as to which one?). Then just use the power cable from there.  Be C and place the 3a inlune fuse ---i knew to do that

I also saw on HB website that you could buy the AS PC2(but it says to not use it with a 900 series unit---i guess that mean don't use it to update when the unit already has a MMC reader)--which includes a power up with 8AA batterys and a hookup for your computer to see it on your computer screen.

I just really want the power up portion of it to play with it in simulator mode.

I bought this thing a month ago now and haven't had a chance to install it.  And if you can believe it or not we got 4in of snow again today in TEXAS ~!!!~!!!! and calling for an additional 2-5in today -----UUGHHH !!!!

ANy suggestions --would really appreciate it

We use a car battery with a small trickle charger attached.  This powers a number of devices, not all at the same time but does serve as a power supply for 12 items.   chuck

Llunker I Bought  A power cord from Cabelas 10.00 hooked it up to  a used motorcycle battery worked great.
But battery in the house with charger hooked up ocassionally don't make Mama to happy. You remember the old saying argue aLL day  no piece at night. I went down bought a 3 amp AC-DC Power Supply with built in fuse and off on switch. It has a 12 volt lighter plug and or wires to hook up any devise that runs on 12 volts. It puts out a constant 13.9 volts. Price around 50.00 Radio Shack. It is real quiet , small and clean. Model # 22-507  If you are interested.     Gary

Gary this is interesting.  Bobby has asked a good question. I never thought about influences on a 12 volt supply.  the garage is one area but in house office is another.  I agree with your wife.   ;D        With so many types of supplies it makes sense to ask the first question...where will this be used?  that certainly will narrow down the type.  And for the guys who are affected with weather  why not have the unit in hand in the garage, office or other area.  The more we play with the unit the better we get as users.  Good topic.    Chuck

Thats the same unit I have, and it is worth the money to have a dedicated power supply without having a battery laying around the house.

Well for $29.95 i bought a 12 volt jump pack at my local auto parts store called "jump starter 300" .

It works perfect.  Now I kinda bit off two things at once here.  Now I also have something for on the water in case my battery ever dies and i can also use it at home for playing around on my unit in sim mode.

It even has low alarm technology which alarms you when you need to charge your pack up.  I haven't got around to installing my unit on the boat yet and was using my 3a inline fuse holder that sits in a fuse block.  Clipped onto that and away she went.

Been having fun now for over two hours.

What are some basic settings?  especially for beam ??

Thanks guys

Is this unit similar to what you are describing?  Look here:   http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/592779-300_amp_jump_starter.html (http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/592779-300_amp_jump_starter.html)

How do you connect the 12 volt jump pack to the HB unit?

To save some headaches you probably want to purchase an addition power cable from HB.   Another way is to cut your existing power cable (probably close to the unit) and with parts from radio shack make an in-line connection. This connection would have the connection to the normal power supply or an external supply.  this is not to difficult to do. I will try to make some pictures of this.  Unless someone else has already done this and has pictures.  chuck

here is a photo of my cable that i have yet to install in the boat--which has a 6 outlet slot for fuses.  I am using a 3a fuse here and i am connecting a jump pack like i would to a battery.

Looky here

Then Since I haven't actually installed the unit yet I am using the orignal power cable that it came with to hook up to the fuse block and and run the cables appropriately.

Hope this helps--but as Soon as i get this all installed in the boat i will have to figure somethingelse out like that radioshack idea.
