Topic: Transducer - Up? Down?

Great Forum!

I am going to attach my pics -- wondering if I have the proper place for the transducer.  I've been reading lots of other great ideas from other people too that I really have used.  So your ideas are valued!

1. Should it go up (vertical) to eliminate possible damage from stuff?
2. Should I move it left or right?  Notice hull strake to the right.

Maiden voyage last night was awesome to see it in action!  Rooster tail quite prominent and the right SI was not so good.  When I tilted the main motor up, it was better.

Scott, you will get some loss on the right SI where the xducer currently is.  I think we are seeing that the SI ducers are very sensitive to location and varies by boat and hull.  And speed.   You might look thru this forum pictures of installations and then experiment some.  SI seems to work best at troll speed, so you might make a small hand held board and attach the ducer to it.  Then while trolling hold the board against the transom in different places.  Years ago when we first started sonar our portable unit ducer was handheld by using the board. Oh yeah,.  the arm got tired.  but for temporary use and to help in final location this might be the option.

It's a little hard to make out but it also looks like you have a gap between your mounting board and the transom hull edge.  It almost looks like the left side of the board is higher than the right which seems to be flush.

If it's working OK, I would not mess with it. I would move the SI up if it is not working properly in that is should be disected from the rear transom from top left corner to the bottom left.  Hard to explain but if you check the HB website on transducers it shows you a pretty good diagram.  I think if you did hit something with that lock down screw in your going to at least be obtaining another bracket, however if you run it without it may only just kick up and not damage anything.

A overall rear shot with motors and side shot would help also.

I do have the 3rd screw in..it's tight.  Take it out?

I'm just saying that you are concerned about protecting it in case you hit something.  Those mounts are designed to disconnect and flip up if this occurs, however, they have provided capability to lock them permanately down with that screw in the back.

If the ducer stays in the mount when you run it wide open next time without the screw in it, I would leave it out.  That way when your running and (if) you hit something, it will disengage itself.

I noticed your in Redwing, so I am assuming your probably fishing the rivers.  Never know when a submerged limb or? comes running down the hull!

If you are not having any issues I would keep it as is.  But it looks to me like you would not be getting the best images on the right side Side Imaging because of the turbulence that is most likely coming off the strake. 

I have a similar hull design and placed mine on the flat part of the strake.
