Title: Oldest Software Version for Ipilot Link Operation
Post by: scgmc on June 26, 2013, 10:11:21 AM
Though I've had my 798 for a year and my 1198 for a few months I am just now hooking up my Ipilot Link. I've never updated any software in either units (or the Ipilot head unit) and I am having a difficult time determining which version to use. Unfortunately I don't know the software version I'm currently running (I'm away from the boat) but the 798 is a year old. I'm pretty sure at a minimum that one will need to be upgraded. I've read from the knowledgeable guys on here that the safest thing you can do is only go to the newest version you actually need. All I need is to have both my units linked together via Ethernet and the ability to use my Ipilot link from either one while still having clear images. I do not think I have the directional GPS puck because my understanding is this is not the stock antenna- it is an extra cost upgrade. I use the internal on the 798 and the one that came in the box with the 1198, which I bought in April. Correct me if I'm wrong on that! So what I'm kindly asking is: can someone tell me which version will get me there with fewest issues? Pointing me to the proper place will work, too. Thanks in advance.

What you are asking is beyond the scope of most
users on here.
First of all, unless you have a 798, and an 1198, and a
Minn Kota trolling motor with I-pilot capability,
and have tried the software updates to get everything working,
you are not going to know what issues exist.

Also, the Ipilot link is fairly new, which will probably require
one of the newer updates.  Some of the newer updates
have had problems.

Your best bet is to call Humminbird customer service at
1-800-633-1468 and let them help you sort it all out.

scgmc,
The last released software for the 798ci HD Si and 1198c Si units has corrections for the use of the i-Pilot Link.  You will also need to update the software for the I-Pilot Link Controller and possibly the I-Pilot Link itself.  There are directions on the Humminbird web site for this or you can call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks and ask them as well.

OK- Thanks guys.
Unfortunately it appears that puts me at the 6.610 (or higher) version which according to at least some of the guys here, translates into a non-clear picture.
Guess I don't have much choice if I want to enable the Ipilot link.  :( Who knows,  maybe mine won't have any issues. Fingers crossed.

The newest version has less problems than the 6.610 version.  That version should be available for download on Humminbirds web site after you register your unit.
There are also fixes in the latest update for the I-pilot link that people have reported has helped the spot lock work a lot better.

Bob- Thanks. I assume that is the 6.640 version you're talking about.
