GPS Not Recognized After Firmware Update (4.750)
« on: February 28, 2010, 07:48:47 PM »
The weather was finally nice enough today to get the boat out and play with the new down imaging upgrade. The first thing I did was power the unit up and reset the unit to factory settings. Then I popped in the SD card with the new firmware. Went thorugh the setup as I have before. After it completed, it restarted and attempted to reconfigure the interlink. this configuration failed and the unit would not recognize the GPS. This happened to me before when I tried to update to 4.500, so I never did get that update.

I tried to search for answers to this without any luck. I would appreciate any help or ideas. I did get to play with the down imaging, and there is no way I am going to go without this now.

Thank you,

Cameron

Cameron,

I would revert back to one of the previous updates and see what happens with the GPS.  Then try the update again.  I would restore the defaults before and after the update as well.

Tell me a little more about your configuration.  Is your GPS reciever hooked into your unit or into the Interlink?  Any other accessories?

Try a basic setup with no Interlink or Accessories attached and see what happens as well.

Let us know if that helps!

The GPS is connected to the interlink which has the 997c and a 787c2i connected to it. The 787 utilizes the internal GPS as it is in the front of the boat, and the 997c uses the external GPS. There is also a Weather Sense module attached to the interlink.

I will install an older version of the firmware and try again based on your comments. It'll be the weekend before I can try it again as the boat had to go inot the shop for some inor repairs.

Thanks for the response. Your help is very much appreciated.

Cameron,

You may also want to consider hooking the GPS directly to the 997.  The prior update added the faster GPS refresh rate at 4 times per second.  You will not get this refresh rate through the Interlink.  And since the front unit has an internal GPS, there really is no benefit to having it hooked up that way.

Good Luck,

Robert,

Can I do that and still use the Interlink? I have not looked at this in quite some time, but I thought I could only hook up one of these items, the GPS or the Interlink. I use the interlink to allow the two units to talk to each other (obviously) and wouldn't want to loose that connection.

I'll definately look into that. Thanks again for the help, it is apprecieated.

Absolutely, you can still use the Interlink to share the data.  This is how mine is set up.  I have a 997c with GPS reciever hooked to 997c, then Interlinked with 785c2 Chartplotter.  The Chartplotter gets its NMEA data through the Interlink from the 997c.  You will need to use the ACCSS Y Cable to do this.  One side has NMEA Connection to the GPS Reciever and the other is the ACCESSORY connection to the Interlink.

Since you have an internal GPS on the 787c, you can now get the higher GPS refresh rate on both units with this setup.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Absolutely! Just use the splitter. Sometimes the answer is so obvious you overlook it. Thank you so much. It will be fixed before I hit the water again.

I just wanted to follow up and let you know that this DID work, without flaw. I disconnected the GPS from the Interlink and connected it straight to the unit. Powered it up and everything worked. So then I looked on the Humminbird website to verify which Y cable I needed to hook up the Interlink. While reading the description, it stated that this cable is shipped with the external GPS. Walked downstairs, dug out my original box and what do you know, a Y cable! It'll all be put back together tomorrow. Just in time for my first tournament this weekend.

Thank you,

Cameron
