899CI HD SI issue (image heavy)
« on: March 06, 2015, 08:09:39 PM »
Greetings,

Since new, I've been struggling with my 899CI HD SI. At one point Hummingbird was nice enough to send a replacement transducer which did not resolve the issue. Last month I sent the entire unit and transducer in for service which was returned with a clean bill of health. Based on the images below which were taken with factory default settings, what do you suppose could be the cause of the erratic display (I'm not ruling out user error)? The boat in question has no trolling motor or other electronics and the main engine is off.

I should also add that SI has never produced detailed images.

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated!

Also with the side imaging it looks like your moving at .03 mph si  works the best when you match your boat speed with screen speed. For example if your going 3 mph set your chart speed to 3.

Is your unit set to max mode or clear mode? All I see are weeds maybe a hump in one pic. the last 2d pic looks good it might be sensitiveity is set a little high or its on max mode if it is on max mode try clear mode for shallow water but I don't see anything that would be concerning to me.

It takes quite a while to get used to using these SI units.  I have had my 999 for a year and am just now getting comfortable with the different settings.  This site has been a real blessing as I have tried to learn how to properly use my HB.  Depending on what you are trying to accomplish dictates the kinds of settings you need.
2D in Max mode shows every particle  in the water(normally too much detail/clutter) while Clear mode tends to just show you the stuff you are interested in seeing.

SI & DI are influenced greatly by the depth setting.  On AUTO it is hard to see as much detail as you might like.  If you are in 20ft of water AUTO is likely to set the depth at 30-40ft which wastes valuable screen space.  I set my upper limit to around 3ft(eliminates top 3 ft of water) and my lower limit to 20ft so what I am actually looking at is the bottom 17ft of water.  If I want to really examine an object I might set upper limit to 10ft thus my screen fills with only the bottom 10 ft and much more detail of an individual object.

SI & DI sensitivity settings really make a difference.

I guess what I am saying is it just takes time on the water actually working with the controls and settings to fine tune the unit and the USER.  Hang in there and keep plugging away at it.  The more time you invest early on the better your results will be.  I wasted my first 6 months concentrating on fishing thinking the 999 should just show me what I needed to see.  Well it doesn't.  I asked a bunch of questions on this site, read most of the posts and tried to apply what others had done to improve results and gradually my images are improving.
