From the login menu scroll down to "Software and Software Development", in this area is "Other 3rd Party Software" Humviewer and Yellowfin are great viewing tools.

Take the time to learn these they will show you a lot of what you missed while on the water.  Also try to keep your recording to 30 minutes or less, they get too long to view.

I have also put together a power source based on Greg's recommendations to use my unit in the house to view the recordings.  This way I can review the topography as well.  Yellowfin and Humviewer are limited to sonar.

Also, I have a standalone harddrive (1 terabyte) where I keep most of my recordings, over time these files will take up a lot of room on your computer.

True, true George!
The standalone harddrive is the next thing I'll get. My laptop takes lightyears to start up since I have the HB records saved on it.

I am unable to view my recordings on the computer. They work great on my 997si
but not on the computer. When I convert the files to xtf and try to change to
siv files, it loads but remains a xtf in SIview. Any help would be appreciated.

They have some pretty cheap external hard drives today, a smaller one may be the best for keeping just your HB stuff on it.

I over did it on mine because of all of my woodworking research.

Before I transferred my HB stuff my computer really slowed down and was giving me trouble.  Now I make sure I have at least 8 GB of free space on on C: Drive.  It does not take long to fill up an 80GB drive.

Try this

First make a folder on your Desktop, then copy & paste all of the files from your card to the folder.  Download Humviewer into this file and install.  Then run it and load one of the files (*.dat)
On the upper right corner click on "play.  Play with this it is the easiest to run.

I also like Yellowfin it is a great program, but you will need to run a conversion program.

Again scroll down to the programming section from the login screen.

If you go to the login page and scroll down to Software and Software Development, it is in there some place.

I just found it by doing a search on the internet "humviewer"

Here is the address: "http://humviewer.cm-johansen.dk/"

We have Martin (mrj9600) to thank for this software.

Just went from SD 2gig cards to Extreme III for movies...my Card Reader (which worked fine for a year with the standard SDs)...rejects the Extremes...soooo?
Also, is there anyway to actually see a movie while its being recorded?  Post the steps if so...

Reelman,
That 2GB card was probably an SD type memory card.  What size is the Extreme III memory card you bought?  If it is larger than a 2GB like a 4GB or 8GB memory card than it is an SDHC type memory card.  The SDHC memory cards need to use a card reader that is SDHC capable, so you may need to purchase a new memory card reader.  These are usually less than $20 at most electronics retailers.

No problem since we didn't write the sonar recording viewer software.  I was told one time that there was a program that Mac users could install that aloows them to run PC programs.  Perhaps you should look into this.

Reelman,

I think you need a little more understanding of how sonar works and the recording process.  The files that are recorded are not "Movies".  The Humminbird Units and other side scan units record each individual ping data to the SD card.  If you play the recording back on the unit, the internal software reads each individual ping, just like it was happening in real time.  That allows the user to change features, colors, screens, and view GPS data.

In rder to play back the sonar data, it has to be converted to a format that is recognised by other side scan sonar software, or you have to create a viewer to interpret the data.  Humminbird at this point has decided not to get in to the SSS software business.

So, with that, there are several programs available to view and play back the recordings.  Some may need to use the HBSI Converter I wrote, and others can import the Sonar files directly.

As I understand it, there are PC emulators for MAC that can run PC programs.  This may be yor best chance.

I hope this helps.

Perhaps so...I luv my HB 997 ...
BUT the point stands...we have common cross-platform programs like Real Player and Quicktime around many years...that is the way to go...not paying some 3rd party to write exclusive (restrictive) software...what if every company that makes movies did that? You would have dozens of this programs...not good, very bad...HB should phase out this and take a 2009 approach.

Reelman,
We haven’t paid anyone to write 3rd party Si viewing software.  These folks took it upon themselves to write it and I image did so in whatever format they were most familiar with.  Still, I see your point in that it would be nice to be able to come back home and dump all of the pictures and recordings into one universal program which would work on any Mac or PC.

Thanks for responding...maybe they (HB) will eventually realize that a Recording code/format compatible with a known cross platform proven program like Quicktime or Real Player or both is best in the long run to compete.
All a single user (customer like me) can do is to create awareness...that has now been done.

There are many other companies out there that manufacture side scan sonars. I do not know of one that will work with quick time or real player. Most of them do give you a viewer program with the unit. I'm certain that if Humminbird supplies a program, the cost would be added to the unit. The cheepest unit that I know of other than humminbird  is in the 7 to 8,000 dollar range. I'll stick with humminbird and use the program Robert wrote.

You can remain unconvinced but I believe it will be a loooong time before you will see cross platform programs that will run under quicktime or realtime.  Only if one of the competitors comes out with cross platform programs will HB make the move.  Currently they will not give programmers outside of their organization the codes to develop viewers.  These guys have spent a lot of time breaking down the files and writing their own codes.  Humviewer and Yellowfin are the 2 current programs that most of us use to view the files on our computers.

We thank our lucky stars that we have these folks developing the viewing software.

Reelman,

The HB format is not anything even closely related to being a "movie".  You need to understand that the recording is nothing but raw binary data coming from the unit that contains GPS info, heading, speed, and a bunch of other info used to make calculations.  It is pure binary data, thats it.  The data then has to be read and interpreted by a program, either in the HB unit itself or in a software program and is then displayed bit by bit to represent the individual sonar echos and returns that you see on the screen.

Again, from a programmer, this is nothing like a standard movie format.  A lot of processing goes in to actually displaying the images you see on the screen and thats why a proprietary program is needed.

Side Scan Sonar has been around now for decades, before many of us were even using computers.  The techs, geeks, and nerds (no offense, I am one) who develop things like this would have long ago made it adaptable to quicktime or other video players if it were possible.  They are just completely different applications and formats, each with its own purpose!

If the playback were nothing but a movie file, you would not be able to perform some of the post processing features that many of the programs offer, like measuring the length of an object, marking waypoints, changing screen colors, or how about changing the screen to a different view or multiple views.  A movie just cannot do this!

I hope this helps to understand it a little better.
