Title: Down Imaging

Will down imaging give an accurate reading if not moving or do you have to be moving for it to work properly?

You can get "information" from Di when moving VERY slowly or sitting still.....but it is much more difficult to interpret than the images you get of structure when moving at a steady rate..... and it will be nothing like the DI images you normally see posted..

so then ........... SI and DI while moving ................ 2D sonar (switch fire) for sitting still

One point to elaborate what Bob has mentioned ...

Echo targets that are repeatedly pinged in any sonar beam will be "painted" into the image as an elongated continuing echo line (following the direction of the screen scroll) ...

Even a target in the 2d cone shaped beam ...which stays in the beam ... (Either by the boat not moving or the target moving with the boat) ... Will be "painted" as horizontal lines on the 2d display) ...

The same applies to the DI fan shaped beam ...

If the boat is not moving ...and an echo target stays in the DI fan shaped beam ...that target gets "pinged" repeatedly ...which is then "painted" into the DI image as horizontal lines across the display ...

The "movement" is recommended is DI imaging (and SI imaging) to keep from repeatedly "pinging" the target over and over again ...

So DI not moving does work in garnering info ... And that info would be that target is continually in the DI fan beam as long as that horizontal line echo is being "painted" in the DI image ...

When the horizontal line disappears from the DI image ...either the boat moved the DI fan beam away from the target ...or the target moved out of the DI fan beam ...

So in summary it is best in all modes that either the boat be moving or the fishing swimming under the boat to get a  good image otherwise if boat and fish are not moving then it is as you described a line on the graph.

Picture is a screen shot of boat barely moving while the fish were

Yes, but it really depends on what you are trying to get out of your sonar.  Until you become more familiar with what your sonar is showing you than some type of movement (boat and/or fish) is better for image interpretation, like the image of “spaghetti” you posted.
