Best placement for 1199 and Helix 10
« on: August 20, 2019, 04:43:49 PM »
I have an 1199 at the helm.  I'm going to get a Helix 10.  Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on which one should go on the bow?

Some think in terms of which technology would be most beneficial at which station  ...:

1199 is square shaped - sometimes an advantage for vertical height (2d or DI)  ...

HELIX is rectangle shaped - sometimes an advantage for horizontal width (SI)  ...
----

Some think in terms of bigger screen at bow because the eyes are farther away from the screen  ...
-----

Some think in terms of using the newest unit at the most visited station  ...

What are the advantages and disadvantages if the 1199 and Helix unit have separate transducers?  Is it best to have both share the Helix mega transducer?  The Helix will be the primary unit at the helm and the 1199 will be secondary at the bow.

Advantage with both xducers is being able to get Sonar data from the end of the boat that you're actually fishing from  at any given time  ...

Disadvantage is limiting the features of the HELIX (if it's a CHIRP HELIX) to having to shut off CHIRP in the HELIX to share Sonar data to the 1199  ...

(CHIRP must be shut off any CHIRP unit to share Sonar data to a non-CHIRP unit)

If both in use sharing the helix xducer doesn't the 1199 function as normal without CHIRP?

No sir  ... Sonar data cannot be shared from the HELIX CHIRP xducer to the 1199 without first shutting off the CHIRP in the HELIX CHIRP Configuration Menu under the Setup tab  ...

This, in effect, renders the HELIX to transmit fixed frequently Sonar (which can be Shared to the 1199)  ...

So note : if the 1199 has its own xducer attached - the 1199 can still get Sonar data from its own xducer without shutting off CHIRP in the HELIX CHIRP unit  ... The 1199 just cannot get Sonar data from the HELIX CHIRP xducer without first shutting off CHIRP in the HELIX CHIRP Menu settings  ...

Will the XM 9 HW MSI T work with the 1199?

Running two SI Xducers of the stern.  I assume if they're both in use they'll need to be on separate frequencies.  Mainly concerned about placement.  The attached screenshot shows current placement to the right of the motor with no SI issues.  Planning on running the XM 9 HW MSI T that comes with the Helix G3N Mega.  Thoughts on proper placement to the left of the motor?

Do you mean direct connected to the 1199  ...??

(We discussed the limits of sharing the MEGA xducer thru ethernet to the 1199 earlier in this thread)  ...

Mirror the placement from the starboard side to the port side  ...

You may get a return echo close to the centerline in the SI image  ... Just test and see  ...

Sorry Rickie.  I know I keep beating a dead horse.  Hummingbird Rep said the 1199 will not work with the Helix MSI Xducer.

Sorry Rickie.  I know I keep beating a dead horse.  Hummingbird Rep said the 1199 will not work with the Helix MSI Xducer.

No need to be sorry  ... We do a lot a unconventional setups here that HB says don't do (Warranty stuff again)  ...

Scenario 1 : MEGA xducer direct connected to the 1199 will work (in theory because the wires channels are the same)  ... But quality of images is unknown  ... I know of no source that has tried this  ...

Scenario 2 : MEGA xducer connected to HELIX and shared thru ethernet can only be accomplished by turning off CHIRP in the HELIX to share fixed frequency Sonar to the 1199  ...

Be advised that we here at sideimagingsoft are not affiliated with HB in any way  ... And that scenario 1 above is not recommended by HB and if something happens - HB will not honor the warranty for an "unconventional" Setup mishap  ...

Scenario #2 is what I favor.  Still on the fence whether to retain the XHS 9 HDSI 180T.  What are your thoughts on Transducer Shield and Savor bracketed to the side of the Jack Plate?  Would the readout be better than directly mounted to the transom on my boat?

An xducer on each end of the boat gives more options of where to get sonar data from in the network  ...
-----

Lots of bass boats mount the SI xducer on the jackplate  ... Just realize this xducer will be out of the water while up on plane  ...

So you may also think about using the M 9 SIDB Y cable and a secondary 2d xducer (either on the transom or in the bilge if your boat is fiberglass) for high speed depth readings...

Ok how does this setup sound to you.  Use Transducer Shield and Saver for the HDSI 180T on the trolling motor and in its place on the transom I will mount the XM 9 HW MSI T?  They will be networked together but mostly to share waypoints.  I will wire the XM 9 HW MSI T directly to the Helix unit at the helm.

What you see as the benefits to a TM mounted SI transducer?

Using SI from the TM allows you to see objects near the bow as opposed to viewing objects from the stern when at bow.  Remember the SI beams are out to each side of transducer and thin slices.  If you share transom mounted SI to bow, by the time you see an object on bow unit you've already passed it.  (see post #3, as Rickie explained).
