Is there a AC power supply available for the 1198 c SI from either Humminbird or aftermarket, or do you have to power it off of a computer.
Thanks

Any 12v DC power supply with a sufficient power rating should work just fine - you'll need to splice the existing cable to the ends of a bare-wire HB power cable. We run a number of different units in the office off quite a motley collection of power supplies with no issues.
Given what the marine manufacturers charge just for bare cables it's probably just as well they don't sell power supplies :)

No doubt. I appreciate the info.

It is "unofficially" recommended by most to use a power source of 12v with a minimum 1amp (1000ma) output...

When you have the units hooked up on the 12v power supplies are you able to go into forced simulation in order to save the settings? I'm interested in doing this since I have to keep my boat in storage and will have the units (998 and 1198) at home. I've found a 12v pwr supply at radio shack rated for 2.5amps that should work.
Thanks in advance

Yes.....If you go into forced simulator mode your settings should be saved when you power down the unit.....just make sure to power it down with the button on the unit.....Not by disconnecting power.

Does it matter which wire gets hooked to positive and negative when connecting the ac power supply? Also is there a way to pull up your map in normal mode without buying an extra GPS antenna wen not on the boat?

Your map is the same in normal or full simulator. The default GPS location in Full Simulator is in either Georgia or Florida(depending on the age of your unit).
You can change the GPS default by positioning your map on the lake location of your choice, then <menu><menu>, select Chart Tab, the set the Set Simulator Position option.
Example: I Set Simulator Position to the dam on Lake Fork.

Thanks gazoo, that's very useful info.

But, can you set and edit waypoints in sim mode? Alternate power source is great but will it give us full function of the unit (-sonar obviously)

I do this a lot which searching my maps for new interesting topography to check out when I get back to the lake...
The "Forced Simulator" is basically a recording Doug Vahreberg captured on one of his lakes....
Doug's recording is being inserted into the sonar views with full functionality of settings...(a great learning tool for how different settings affect the sonar views)...
You can even take "Snapshots" and "Recordings" of the "Forced Simulator" that is inserted into the sonar views...(if you have a SD Card inserted into one of the slots)...
The chart views are not part of Doug's recording being inserted into the unit...Set the "Set Simulator Position" to your home lake...and you will have full functionality of the chart ...including setting/editing waypoints...
The boat icon movement in the chart views will just make a huge square boat track ...starting at the point where the "Simulation Position" was set...but you can still press the 4way cursor to freeze the chart and move the "crosshairs" cursor to anywhere on the map for marking waypoints...
Just be aware that after pressing "Mark" to set a waypoint...if you press the "Exit" button to remove the crosshairs...the boat icon position will "jump" back to the "square track" it was making at the point of "Set Simulator Position"...

Sweet, thanks Rickie!

I bought a power supply from radio shack rated for 12.5v and 2.5amps and use it at home. I also bought a spare power cord from HB that works for the 1198 and 998. The polarity matters when hooking up the power.

What happens if the polarity is flipped?

The unit will not work.
There is some reverse polarity circuitry that tries to protect the unit from this, but I wouldn’t test it too many times. :o LOL!
