Title: Where to mount trolling motor transducer?
Post by: spes on January 08, 2013, 11:03:08 PM
Hello,
If I want to mount an XTM 9 SI 180 T on my TM
the manual for it says to mount it forward of the motor shaft.

Will it still work if you can't mount it forward of the motor shaft?

Yes, it will still work. Which sonar unit do you have? the 89X, 99X, and 119X should be the HDSI transducer. If you have a 798SI or 598SI, then that transducer is the right one.

I am going to be purchasing a 798 very soon.
(Going to a boat show in a few weeks, and crossing my fingers to find a good deal)
I plan on returning the boxed transducer to swap for an HDSI for the transom and plan on purchasing an XTM 9 SI 180 T for the TM.

Uhhh…, you had better do some measuring than.  The XTM-9-HDSi-180-T is the same as the transom mount version HDSi transducer except that it comes with a trolling motor adapter in place of transom mounting hardware (many fishermen prefer using the Transducer Shield & Saver adapter as it helps protect the transducer).  It is the same length as the transom mounted HDSi transducer (6 inches long).

Thank you Greg,,
I measured the space on my TM and JUST make it

I'm guessing an XTM 9 SI 180 T would be slightly shorter?
Do folks who do run two transducers.. transom and TM,, do they run HD on both or just one?

Yes the XTM-9-Si-180-T is shorter (almost 4 inches).

I would guess that those who run the HDSi transducer at the transom also run the HDSi at the bow.  You have to for the 800kHz Si sonar to work well.

If you have one display unit and you switch transducers it will be fine.  However if you plan on expanding to two units then only have one on at a time for sonar. These transducers can interfere with each other..

Thanks for the replies.
I havn't bought my unit yet. But I will be getting a 798 before the season starts.
The 798 doesn't have 800khz,, but from what I have read here the HDSI transducer will still give a sharper image.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on that one. Couple hundred difference two go that route.

Not sure how many actually use the 800. I would think that most are using the 455.
