1198c sd card door loose
« on: March 26, 2013, 11:57:18 PM »
I noticed that when I latched the memory card door it was alot looser than my 997 or any of my lowrance's. It seems to me it should latch tighter to ensure it doesnt leak. does this sound normal for a 1198?

Also Is there a cap to cover the connection where I plug in my new 1198. I have an out side boat. I dont like it getting wet in there.

Great Pappy Cat,

I split your topic off from the other one since it was unrelated to the subject in that topic.

You SD card door should not be loose.  The screw lock should be quarter turn and tighten it down so it is not loose and should not come open unless you unscrew it again.

As for the connectors, there is not a cover that I know of.  The connectors are weather rated and should be fine, but I have heard of people putting a ziplock over it with a rubber band to keep the water out if it is exposed when you are not using it.

Hope that helps.  Good Luck.

I believe I have a defective card door. the pin in the door that is held in by an orange o ring seems excessively loose. I see how it works the cam slot draws it down on the silver bar in the unit. As mine latches it draws down loosely then pops back up a little in the fully latched state. What a bummer. Its almost time to fish. I will call customer service

 well... i am SOL

I called customer service. The woman I spoke with misunderstood me and had me almost break my card door off. She was looking at the 998 wich has a removeable door. My 1198 card door does not come off . It needs to be sent to the factory. to be repaired.

The bill of sale is required for warranty work. I bought my unit like new from a wealthy freind. He bought it to mount in dash on his boat but it was to big. So he sold it to me to get a 998 that would fit. He said he never even powered the unit on. All of the hardware was in the original plasticand. I was told that I would get the full waranty because he never registered it. I was told wrong. Aparently the warranty is not transferable. So If I want to get my brand new unit fixed it will cost me a $360 flat rate fee. Really? $360 for a card reader door? What differnce does it make who claims the warraty. IMO the warranty shoould go with the unit. This units waranty was never claimed.

i am very upset.

I'd start by registering the unit, (and signing up for HB select).  Once you've registered, when you call c/s, they ask you your name, and they pull up the information on which unit you have registered and should not give you the wrong info.

If I had known it had a card door that was a little loose and the warranty was not transferable. I still would have bought it. My 997 was so slow it frustrated me so bad just trying to curser to a way point. While I had clients watching. I couldn't afford a new 998 but I wanted 1. When My friend said he would sell his 1198 for $1700 (cost of a 998). I couldn't resist. It was Brand new. I guess I cant complain.

The flat rate is excessive IMO. My card door isn't broken its loose. It probably still seals . If it doesn't , I will fix it my self.

I don't think it's true that you need the bill of sale for
warranty work.
You just have to register your unit.
If you are the first one registering the unit, then
I think the warranty is good, no matter who
bought it.

I agree with ITG.  Get it registered.  go top www.humminbird.com and register. For the most part warrenty starts with registration. Remember these units can set on the dealers shelf for a while before being sold. You dont need the bill of sale to register.  Only the date of purchase...

I also forgot.  You will have to create a logon id with HB from their site before registration.  The site will prompt you and walk you thru the process..

Interesting. I have been registered with humminbird for some time now. I had a 997c before. I registered  my 1198 as soon as i got it. Is this true about the warranty? Can a humminbird rep please tell me the rule here. Thanks Sonar

The problem is there is a manufactured date.  Also if you tell them you purchased it about 9 months ago and the manufacture date is 1 1/2 years old it raises a red flag.  I dont think registering does one bit of good.  The units can be registered multiple times anyway.

I hate to say to be dishonest, but I would just tell them you purchased it a few months ago and the door was always loose.  If they ask if you have proof of purchase, just say no, you misplaced it.

I dont know how loose the door is, but if its in the locked position and you can wiggle it open, then it should be fixed.

The hole problem is I don't have the original sales receipt. I have a stub to a cashiers check I used to pay for it. I registered it about a month ago. When latched the card door does wiggle but it does not wiggle open it stays closed. The Customer service rep I spoke with didn't seem very friendly or in a good mood. Maybe others had lied to her and this was a sore subject. I told her the truth. She put me on hold for 10 min or so while she asked about my warranty. When she came back. I was told no original sale receipt no warranty and the warranty was NOT transferable. I don't think its fair. I know for a fact this unit never had a claimed warranty.

Id call back and say nothing about buying it off you friend.  If you registered it a month ago and don't have the receipt anymore, how can they void your warranty???  See if your friend still has the original and say it was a gift.
