997c SI

I can't tell anything by looking at my side imaging, it just looks like a bunch of lines going down both sides. Any suggestions?

Please post a snapshot from the unit so we can see whats happening. 

Sounds like you are either sitting still and scanning the same spot continuously or you are moving very slow with a high chart speed.

changing the speed helped, but it still doesnt look quite right

It looks much better than the first.  You were turning a little in the second image and got a few distortions.

What do you have the Sharpness on?  Turn it Off or Low.

By the screen snapshot you are only moving at 0.4 or 0.4mph.  If this was the speed you were actually moving at when you imaged these areas than try either slowing the Chart Speed all the way down or speed the boat up.
