Messing around with 998C...
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:47:47 PM »
So, I was reading the operators manual... Go figure...

And I realized I didnt have the unit setup for SI as optimally as I could...

SO, I changed them according to the manual...

Here is what I have found so far...

I like seeing both the realtime color sonar and side imaging at the same time... 800kHz definately makes a huge impact on the clarity of the picture...

I also noted that you can see many objects on SI even in very shallow water... I saw a downed tree in 4 feet of water when many people told me I would not be able to utilize it in less than 10 foot of water...

So now the fun begins... I have read two different posts here but have a few questions...

First, if you have multiple SD cards in, will it overlay all of the data?
It seems it won't which seems silly to me, I mean why would i buy a card if the data present on the unit cant be displayed at the smae time as the lake maps I purchased???

That being said, how can you tell which maps are accurate, and which maps you should avoid? I have the Navionics Hot Maps Platinum Plus for both the S united states and the MSD632 for all of the lakes which I fish, south of Ocala...

If you were me and "typically" you would not fish anything deeper than 30 feet.... what map would you use and how would you set it up?

Thanks guys!

Love the site, cant wait to learn more!

Tight Lines,

Mike,

To answer the first question.

No, it will not overlay all the data.  The Navionics will overlay like the aerials, but that is because it is all the same format.  If you have a Navionics and a LakeMaster, they are two different formats.

Well, as for which one is more accurate, I would say the LakeMaps will probably be more accurate especially if they have the 1' depth contours.  And of course always use the lates maps if possible.

I will have to yield the last part to some of the other guys here on the forum.  But basically, you will have to chose which maps you would want to use for the specific location you are at.  No way to set it up automatically.

Hope that helps,

Robert,

It does help a bit, although; both the SD's I am using are the NAVIONICS hotmaps... Plat+ (One is South and the other is Central to SE FL) which is why I thought it would overlay all the info...

I guess I will just have to choose which SD card for each new location and see which one has data which corresponds to what I am seeing at any given location...

Im still learning, but it is coming together a little at a time...

Hmmmmm!  Platinum should be the better of the two, but that is not always the case as we have found out!  Sometimes charts can be incomplete.

Best to check each one when you go out and see if one has more detail than the other!
