SD Cards for 798si
« on: March 08, 2014, 10:58:17 PM »
What is the max size of SD card will the 798si accept? I know it has two card slots but I can't find what sizes are acceptable.

It depends what you want to do with it. For software updates, waypoints and snapshots, I have a 4 GB standard SD and it works fine. Now if you want to make recordings, most on here agree that the SanDisk Ultra or Ultra 2 is the way to go. I use and 8GB sandisk ultra for my unit when making recordings. It will also obviously do snapshots and waypoints as well. A good all in one card if you will. Hard to think youd need much more than 8 gb, although some go with 16 or even 32.

I think 32GB is the highest capacity card you can use.
Wait for Greg to confirm this Monday.

Thanks.  As I am new to SI and a bit of a tech junkie I will use the largest card that the unit will support to record everything in sight.  At least for a while.  Just ordered my unit and I have a couple large cards that I can rob from other devices to try when I get it in.  Should be delivered this week.

Remember to format your cards so they do work with your 798 unit, Humminbirdpc can be used to format cards.

Just a few suggestions when recording...

Make multiple smaller recordings (30minutes or less) instead of very long recordings..(longer recordings take longer to load in Humviewer )...

Always Stop the recording with the "Stop" menu in the Xpress menu...never by powering off the unit...(the recording must have the "Stop command" or the recording will not play back...)

When playing back the recording on the unit...there is a "Fast forward" in the Xpress menu...if you select the fastest "Fast forward" speed, the unit will FREEZE until the recording reaches the very end of the recording...(none of the buttons will respond during this freeze except maybe the power button)..

If your recording is very long- this "unit freeze" will seem like FOREVER...

Confirmed!
32GB is the largest SDHC that our units can use (they are the largest capacity SDHC type memory cards).

I don’t know that I would run out and get a 32GB though.  Multiple 4 to 8 GB SDHCs would be less expensive per GB and would allow you to use multiple memory cards in case the one you are using fails.  Stick to the higher speed ones of you are making sonar recordings.  We have seen good reports for the SanDisk Ultra and Extreme memory cards.

Any class 10 card under 32G should work for that then?   >:D
I have a 32GB G-Skill 10-class in my 998 and it records on it fine, have not tried a F/W update from it though...

Yes, though you don’t need that fast of a memory card for screen snapshots, software updates or waypoint management.  I still use a SanDisk 16MB MMC card when working with waypoints and a 64MB with software updates.
