Help With HumminbirdPC
« on: April 02, 2013, 04:14:39 PM »
First, I must confess I've hit the wall downloading HumminbirdPC software - completely baffled by what this software is for and how to download it.  I've tried to download it 4 times.  Each time I'm confronted with an unidentified Down Load manager that wants to install a number of 3d party software programs on my computer.  After declining those "offers", I cannot get anything to download that resembles something called HumminbirdPC.  Then after I agree to some kind of user license from an unidentified source called GNU, the program still does not download - but, then asks me to register on someones unidentified registration form.  Really bizzare.
I am very familiar with downloading software, do it all the time - this download makes no sense to me.  I have the latest Java program installed.
So, what is the ACTUAL program that is suppose to be downloaded?  Is it "humminbirdpc" or something else?  And, how do you download the program?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Bob

Bob,

You should be able to log in to your Humminbird account and click on the download under your unit.  I have also loaded it here in the download section.

It does require you have some windows updates or add ons installed.

Thanks for the quick reply Robert.  Using the link on the download section of this forum, all that downloads is a program called "Free Down Load Manager" and "FDM Remote Controlled Server".  I don't know what those two programs are (no explanations), so I'm deleting them.  Nothing downloaded called "humminbirdpc".  My computer is fairly powerful and with updated Windows files.  What I find really curious is that this download tries to install series of unrelated 3rd party software programs into my PC.  Do I have to say "yes" to these intrusive downloads to get "HumminbirdPC" program?

Bob,

No, you should not!

I checked the download for 4.3.8 here on the site.  It works fine. And you are in the Downloads section link on the top menu?

Here is the direct link to the download for HBPC 4.3.8

Have you done a virus scan lately?  There is a virus called Free Download Manager!  You may have a virus on your computer!

bobxxx,

Its not the download from the site here.  I have verified it several times.  Any number of reasons your computer could have locked up.  HBPC may have tried to install other components, etc.

No, I understand.  Your issue is completely different than what MTBob was describing and doesnt mean the download isnt working.

I would recommend downloading it from the HB site and seeing if you have a similar issue.  I know the HB PC installer will try to download additional files if needed and could cause your computer to hang.  I have had this happen in the past as well.

I'm hesitant to pursue this HumminbirdPC download issue too far, it seems that I may be the only one having the problem.  But, here's the details of what's happening.  As background I'm using Windows 7 on a 64 bit desk top computer
1) last night I ran a full computer virus scan using AVG - it found nothing
2) this morning I reloaded (for about the 5th time) the HumminbirdPC software link from the Humminbird website, file name 590066-1_v4.3.8_d9abd456d71247fcbb64431eb4c3d0b8.exe
3) re-re ran the installation again with the same unsuccessful results.  Here are the photo screen shots of the download steps:
A typical download window

But, then this "download" screen appears

And, goes through a series of prompts that seem like it's not related to Humminbird

And this then is where I bailed out of the download process - I couldn't confirm that this step was related to HB or hijacked by some other 3rd party

But, after cancelling out of the process, and a couple more odd displays the download came back with this screen:

If this doesn't make sense to anyone - that's OK.  I'm growing weary of trying to figure out how to use this software.  Perhaps after I become more familiar with the HB sonar/charting process I'll be more interested in getting some kind of software program.

I was going to not follow-up on this thread, since the problem with my computer was fairly hard to describe and it may be a problem localized within my computer.  But, I've resolved the problem and others may find the solution helpful.
To recap, the difficulty I had was trying to simply get the HumminbirPC program to download, using FireFox web browser - typically a really easy, uneventful task.  But, apparently FireFox, for some bizzare reason, allowed the download to be hijacked by a third party downloader that corrupts the download process.
So, I simply switched to Microsoft Explorer web browser and HumminbirdPC program downloaded flawlessly.
Lesson learned - if you have problems downloading humminbirdpc, try a different web browser like Explorer.

Hi Bob,
I had exactly the same problem when using Chrome. I even mailed HB support to tell them they had a trojan in their download. It was completely bizarre and to this day I don't know how it was happening - and I consider myself fairly tech savvy. It worked fine with IE, on their suggestion.
