If cost was the same which unit would be better for up front application?

Either – they both have the same sonar capabilities.
The 958c DI is an older model but has a larger display and uses an externally mounted GPS Receiver.
The 859ci HD DI is a current model and uses an internal GPS Receiver.

Greg, Thanks for the reply.  I have not posted in some time.  Can I use the transducer that comes with either unit on the trolling motor, and does the LED in the 8 series make a big difference.  My tournment days have come to an end and I fish 2 to 3 days a week when there is no snow.

Yes you can use the transducer that comes with either unit (same transducer) on the trolling motor but you would have to use some type of adapter for it.  You could make use of our Transducer Exchange program (http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=1766).

I am guessing that you are referring to the LED backlighting here, so the answer is Yes it does, or at least it does to my tired eyes.

Greg, thanks again, but a few more questions you for anyone.  I decided on a 899 Ci hd si.  I currently have a 798Ci hd si at my console with the si transducer on the transom and a puck glassed in for running per your suggestion some time ago.  It seems to make the most sense to me to move the 7 series up front and move the 8 series to the console. Having said that, what is the best way to share waypoints with these 2 units?  And can I just plug my current setup for my 7 right into the 8 series?  The help is appreciated.

Is the 798 the HD model?  If it is, you can connect the 2 units directly with ethernet.  If not, you would need the interlink to connect the 2 units.

Bob B is correct; if that is a 798ci HD Si model your best bet would be an Ethernet connection between the units.

You should be able to use the same transducer set-up from the 798 unit for the 899ci HSD Si unit and use the 899’s transducer for the 798 unit (or exchange it for a trolling motor version transducer).  The power cable you may or may not have to change all depending on if it has a lump in it.  This lump is an in-line filter, so if the 798’s power cable already has this just use the 899’s up front with the 798 unit, otherwise swap them around or better yet get another one (PC-11) for the 798 as it may end up needing it due to trolling motor noise.  The unit mount and connector collectors (holders) are different and will have to be swapped.
