HB 798 SI HD compatibilty to Raymarine Autopilot EV-100
« on: May 14, 2014, 07:13:50 AM »
Hello
wondering if anyone can help me with my connection to Raymarine Autopilot, what I know is that I need the HB GPS Cable for the connection, also will need to convert the NMEA 0183 signal from the HB 798 to NMEA 2000 to be compatible with the RM Autopilot  using a Actisense NGW-1 STNG which will convert the 0183 signal to NMEA 2000 and also provide the connection cable needed for the Seatalk protocol that RM autopilots use.
what I don't know is whether or not it will work on the autopilot as a chart plotter, can the
798 send and receive data to another devise such as the RM autopilot.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums shsmith05088.

The 798 units can only output (send) the NMEA 0138 date.  They do not receive it from another device.

Are you using an internal or external GPS Receiver?
If external, which GPS Receiver do you have?

I'm using the internal GPS in the 798 now but I do have the HB external antenna that came on the boat
I believe it is the HB-120 dose that sound right..? I wasn't aware I could use the Antenna with my HB 798
it was for a Matrix 27 that I removed after purchase and replaced with my 798.

You can use an external GPS Receiver with the 798 unit but we did not make a HB-120 GPS Receiver.  Maybe an AS-GR4 or AS-GR16?
What is printed on top of the GPS Receiver?
Is there a dark gray gasket between the upper and lower housing of the GPS Receiver or is there no seal visible?
There was no GPS Receiver packaged with the Matrix 27 units so it really depends on when you bought it as to which model it is.

the top of the HB antenna is marked Hummingbird GPS . Accessory, System
I've included photos of the antenna, there are no numbers on the top surface.

That would be an AS-GR16 GPS Receiver.
You could use that with your 798 unit and take the NMEA Output off the NMEA pigtail wire (this is the shorter wire that comes out of the cable connector) to try with your Actisense NGW-1 STNG NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter.  At the end of this second shorter wire is a black plastic cap.  Remove it and you will find three wires.  Terminate the Red Wire as it is a low current +12V output.  You don’t want it to short to anything or the NMEA Output may not work again.  The White Wire is the NMEA + Output while the Black Wire is the NMEA Ground.

Ok now lets make sure I'm on the same page with you, we're talking about the cable from this AS-GR16 GPS Receiver or are you talking about a cable coming off the HB-798..?

Really either way.

If you use the internal GPS from the 798 unit you will need the AS-HHGPS cable and will use the White wire as the NMEA (+) Output connection and the Black wire as the NMEA Ground.

If you use the GR16 GPS Receiver (plugged into the 798 unit) you will use the NMEA pigtail wire that comes out of the connector of the GR16 and use the same connections: White wire = NMEA (+) Output, Black wire = NMEA Ground.

You can but I don’t know if you want to trust what the maps show or not.

Ok again thank you for all the help....I will keep the caution in mind but I'll be using it more for trolling
so it will be slow speed only. it's a little difficult to set downriggers real in fish and drive the boat in a straight
line when your alone...LOL!!! I haven't got the Schnauzer taught to drive the boat yet, but she is good at stopping the fish from flopping around in the boat....LOL!! Thanks Again
