Best lat/long format to use
« on: April 18, 2011, 01:49:46 AM »
Hi, I use a 383c for my kayak and I finally got around to purchasing the accessory to connect the unit to my computer (this model doesn't have an SD card slot).  I'm in the middle of putting in a bunch of GPS numbers using the dd mm ss format, but then I came across some numbers in the dd mm.mmm format.  I went into the preferences to change the input format, and then noticed the older points were off when I checked them out on the Humminbird.  I think something was lost in the conversion?

So how do you guys accurately convert between formats and what's the main format you use to input your numbers?

Thanks!

I use DD.ddddd ,sometime back i read that it was the most accurate. But I don't know if it is. Most programs will automatically convert them. after they are all entered in the format that they are,go to the properties,or preferences,or options tab, where ever you find the option to set the waypoint format and select the one you want or need. All the past entered will be converted to your new choice. I have no Idea how accurate the conversion is. There may also be some on line converters.

Decimal degrees (DD.MMMMM) is very accurate.  In fact the last digit in the mmmmm is equal to 1 meter.  Yes you are right with conversion programs not being able to convert accurately.  Some do better than others.  Some do worse.

We use on the decimal degrees for all mapping or relocation.
