Something that might be of help is to pre-record a record of an event such as a swim course at a triathlon or swim event. Make your width three times the depth.
this way you will have a base to compare to if you have a submersion location.
Of course the better prepared you are for the swim such as floating life guards, kayak/canoe and surfboards to prevent a possible drowning it the primary goal.
We assist with 21 swim events a year and part of the job is to set the swim course buoys. After we have done that we run a recording of the course using the buoys as a guide. We run two recordings. one forward and one in reverse course order.
Tthis does two things: it gives us the bottom before the swim and also a trail to follow if needed to do an after action recording for a submersion. We try not to take out the buoys before confirming the participants have all exited. By having the trail we can run an exact duplicate post event and compare to the initial recordings.

This is what the Cumbria Police diving boat does before the Great North Swim on Windermere each year. Don't know what sonar they're using, but will ask next time I see them to speak to. They're not based on the Lake, so don't often bump into them
