Hi Folks
Been "lurking" for a while on your most excellent forum, whilst doing some research into what to buy before spending the pennies. 
I've had a fishing buddy 110 for some time and was looking to upgrade.
The forum has been most helpful in making my decision.

Finally opted for a 798 CI HD SI 

As i have my own "Portabote" and also hire boats on the trout res'es - I have opted to put my transducer on a removeable bracket - sort of a G cramp that fits on the thwarts or the transom of the various boats I will be using, with a 22" (adjustable) pole going into the water on the bottom of which is mounted my tranducer. Expected top speed of the various boats is in the region of 8MPH only - 4HP outboards max.
Battery (fused) and 798 head mounted on a short wooden board which may be strapped to a boat seat for security and ease of removal.
Was wondering if any other member is using such a set-up and has any experiance based tips to offer for best performance ?

Tony, we use the transducer mounted on a trolling motor shaft with a Johnny Ray bracket at the bottom.
Mounts to any boat and is depth adjustable..

This link will show the transducer bracket I am using - Only slightly modified, as the angle bracket on this one is a little to small for the 798 transducer. Larger plate made and fitted.

Thanks Tony.  wish we had know about that bracket and shaft before we made ours....
It should work just fine...
As we learned dont use above  5 MPH...

Let us know how this works for you..in different boats/setups.....

I was wondering how you like your porta-bote?

There is a local lake close to home that only allows hand launched boats.
I took a hard look at a 12 foot porta-bote, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Anything you really dislike about your porta-bote?

Absolutely love my Porta-bote - had it for several years now, and altho' I'm 66, I can still, singlehandedly, assemble and launch it easily
I am using the dolly wheels, and the slipway at my usual lake - but the short journey from the carpark to the jetty is still very managable, even fully loaded with all the gear for a days fishing.

Nothing that I actually dislike about the 'bote.

I have also used a 12 ft Porta-bote for a couple of years and I must agree with Tony, I love it! When I use it for side-scanning I never travel faster than 4 knots so my very simple removable bracket that is clamped between the gunwale and the tube along the lower part of the hull works well. At higher speeds (up to 14 knots with an old 3.9 hp 2-stroke and only me and no gear) I have to detach it.

Well, the price is a bit high, at least here in Europe.

I also have a 12 ft porta bote and the 798 CI HD SI. My transducer is on a tite-lok transducer bar. I have a 6HP and even at full speed (20km/h) I have pretty clear readings, only little turbulence noise in the watercolum (motor side)....
