I have a 998c si unit. When I go to the brightness level setting it is set on 10. I can set it to 9 & 8 and the brightness is about the same as on the 10 setting. The problem is when I lower the setting to 7 the screen goes almost completely dark. I fish a lot at nighttime and running down the lake with a bright screen blinds me from watching my tracking back to the launch.

That is an older model.
Depending on how many hours you have on it, the screen may just be wearing out.
Everything wears out eventually.
It could also be a battery issue.
Fully charge your battery, and have it load tested.
If the battery is good, then I would call Humminbird Customer service, and see what they say.
They may charge you a small fee to look at the unit.

Unit even for its age has low hours on it. I purchased 3 new batteries this year but still have the problem. Unit brightness is very high. At nighttime it's blinding. Unit just want reduce level of brightness proportional to lowering the number. Thanks for help.

I recall that being an issue for a lot of people who night fished with the units that didn't have LED back lighting. I don't remember if there were any software releases that affected it......What software version do you have?

You might try changing the background color (under one Power button press) ...
It probably won't help any map views ... but it may help the Sonar views not be as bright as the white background ...
You can call HB ... but their flat rate fee is pretty high for legacy units ...

Software version is 7.xx.
The screen I need to reduce brightness on is the navigation screen I think. The screen that shows the layout of River and has the routes I have took showing in blue.

You might also try the inverse color scheme for night.

That and black background.
The LED backlights replaced the CCFL lighting because they are hard to dim down and keep the gas "excited" in the fluorescent lamp.
They require a high voltage to make the gas emit light and when you drop that voltage, the light dies out fast.

You're probably best off either paying the fee (probably would get a 999 {LED} to replace it) or just get a glare filter like a welding curtain uses to kill the amount of light.

Some also use a red filter over the unit at night .... red light doesn't affect night vision as bad as white light.

That's a great idea on filtering the light !!

Look up "window tinting" , places like the big box home improvement stores carry the smoked type for windows.
I think Ace, Lowe's or Home depot get about $15 for a small roll.
Definitely beats the $500 repair price! >:D
