AS GR-16 compatibility with Navman 7100 VHF radio
« on: April 18, 2013, 06:06:23 PM »
Hi all.

I'm trying to connect an AS GR-16 to an VHF radio Navman 7100 but the radio don't show GPS coordinates. I think that the wiring is ok. And my cuestion is, the AS GR-16 can operate independently, without any other Humminbird device like an fishfinder?

Can anyone help me?

Regards.

More information about:

The Humminbird AS GR-16 GPS receiver was purchased for supplying gps positioning data exclusively to the VHF radio.

I connected the GPS red wire to +12V, the black wire to ground and the white wire to NMEA-IN wire of the radio VHF. Both GPS and radio are in the same electrical circuit but the VHF does not display the positioning data.

I have verified that the radio works correctly with a portable gps with the same wiring scheme.

Is that correct cable wiring?

Thanks for your time!

More regards.

Is this wired to the shorter NMEA “pigtail” wires that come out of the GPS Receiver plug or did you cut the connector off and wire it straight to the main cable running to the GPS Receiver?

The White NMEA Output wire of the NMEA pigtail only outputs data when connected to a Humminbird unit that has the NMEA Output menu set to “On”.

You need to remove the White wire connection and instead connect to the Green wire as this is a straight NMEA output from the GPS Receiver and should work regardless of whether a unit is connected to the GPS Receiver or not.  Now depending on what version of the GR16 GPS Receiver you have, will determine whether the Green wire will be available at the NMEA pigtail or only within the main GPS Receiver cable.  Since you made reference to connecting to the Red wire (+12V) you either have the older model GR16 or you have cut the connector off of the main GPS Receiver cable.  In your case, if you have not already done so; you will have to cut off the connector of the GPS Receiver cable to access the Green wire.  You will then have to re-make the Red (+12V) and Black (Ground for GPS Receiver and NMEA Ground) connections again.

Following your instructions I have cut the shorter pigtail and I have connected the green wire with the NMEA-in wire of the VHF radio (and of course the red wire to +12V and the naked wire to ground), and the radio already shows the GPS coordinates perfectly!

Thank you so much!!!
