Title: Helix 9 Mega 2nd High Speed Transducer
Post by: Schell21 on January 21, 2017, 09:52:44 PM
I'm looking at buying a HELIX 9 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N (410090-1) and have heard i should get the MSIDB Y (720094-1) splitter cable so i can have both the XM 9 20 MSI T (710262-1) and a 2nd cheaper 2d transducer for high speed depth readings. Can you confirm that the XNT 9 20 (710214-1) or the XNT 9 20 T (710198-1) would be the correct high speed transducer? I know the temperature wouldn't be used on the XNT 9 20 T but I have a new one laying around and if it works for this setup I would like to utilize it. Thank you.

You are correct ... any of the HB 2d xducers that use 200kHz/83kHz can be used for high speed depth readings ...

The M SIDB Y cable is not available until February (last I heard) ..

You might call HB to see exactly when it will be available ...

Rickie will I get Chirp sonar readings with this setup? Thank you.

Rickie will I get Chirp sonar readings with this setup? Thank you.

CHIRP is a function of the sounder transmit pulse regardless of which xducer that CHIRP signal is pushed thru ... so you will get CHIRP with the added 2d xducer and the M SIDB Y cable ...

I would assume HB has tested CHIRP thru the stock 2d xducers because the HELIX 9, 10, 12 CHIRP Sonar only units use the stock XNT 9 20 T ...

Awesome thanks.

I have troubles to use Y cable to Helix 9 SI mega chirp transducer.
I've purchased MSIDB Y ( part number 720094-1 ) cable XNT 9 20 ( part number 710214-1) high speed skimmer transducer.

Mega transducer works perfect if I connect it directly to fishfinder but it shows really poor picture if I connect it via y cable.
I'd say picture is unreadable.
I've noticed that y cable has 6 metal mother pins for mega slot but 7th slot is empty. i.e. 7th pin from mega transducer is not assumed to transfer signal from mega transducer to the fishfinder. Is that normal?
Should y cable have 7 mother pins or 6 for mega transducer slot?

If I connect high speed skimmer to appropriate slot of y cable then the connection is "loose". In this scenario fishfinder say transducer can't be found.

I'm totally frustrated. Would you mind guys to comment.

There are only 6 active pin channels in the MEGA xducer (even tho there may be 7 pins)  ...

Temp/2d/right SI/DI/left SI/Drain-ground
-----

If the connection is "loose" between the 2d xducer connector and the socket of the Y cable - it sounds like the 2d connector is not being fully seated into the socket of the Y cable  ...

It takes some force to snap the connection together fully  ...

Thanks Rickie!

Temp/2d/right SI/DI/left SI/Drain-ground.

But image quality is so poor after mega transducer is being connected with y cable. I don't even know what's to do with it?
Without y cable in the middle image quality is great I can see each rock structure like photo.

I have to manually switch to high speed skimmer when boat needs to run at speed.

Can I install mega image transducer 2 inches to high speed one?
What should be minimal distance between transducers that they don't interfere with each other?

The SI beams reach from the water's surface to past vertical under the boat  ...

If mounting the SI xducer and an additional xducer on the transom - the 2d xducer should be close to / and higher than the SI xducer... such that the SI beam can pass under the 2d xducer housing  ...

Y cables have been reported as bad right out of the box (rare but occasionally)  ...

If your images are good without the Y cable - and not good with the Y cable = the Y cable is suspect  ...

Contact HB or the dealer you bought the Y cable from  ...

Yes rnvinc!

Y cable I've purchased from bass pro was defective.
I've bought another one and returned original.
Everything works now.

The only "strange" thing I've noticed that di does not show well when I'm moving with speed above 2 mph. But it was even without y cable.

The DI doesn't come from the 2D transducer .... it will be from the mega transducer.   Maybe you are getting some turbulence.

Sorry. I should correct myself.

I have mega chirp G2N transducer.
Down imaging stops showing anything above bottom when the boat drives above 2 mph.

Yes..... the DI comes from the mega transducer with the SI mega series.  Only the 2D will come from the Y cable connected auxiliary  transducer.

I have the splitter and the 2d transducer. They are positioned close to each other with the 2d xducer slightly higher. I don't notice any deterioration or difference in signals between using both xducers or the mega xducer soley.

In  terms of speed performance, I get constant bottom reading at full throttle  (17 ft deep hull aluminum boat 115 hsp Yamaha) 40-43 mph on choppy water . Lose bottom briefly maybe for every minute of full throttle.

I do lose bottom at speed around 25 mph and I notice a lot of turbulence at the back of the boat . Not sure of the full speed range of bottom reading but I do know that I never got reliable bottom readings at full throttle with either the 997si stock xducer or the mega and I have at leas 5mph improvement in bottom reading at the lower end. I would lose bottom at around 17-20 mph with the mega and now its more like 25 mph with the high speed .  Maybe some more fine tuning will increase the spectrum, will see. The other possible turbulence issue if the placement of my transducer mounting board which I attached to the boat that is not perfectly aligned with the bottom of my boat. I don't really know what the ideal setup is fot that (ie I hace a 1"X6X 8 polypropelene board glued and screwed to the transom. Don't know the best alignment to the bottom of the boat and also my transom changes slop on the bottom and I didn't custom cut it. What should be the ideal profile and distance from the bottom?

A mounting board should be flush with the bottom edge of the transom and then apply caulking in the groove between the board and the transom so that there is no ridge or divit to create turbulence at higher speed  ...
