No, the 987c Si units do not have any sort of AIS support at any software level.

Make, The 987 unit doesn't support  AIS.

The GPS antenna  can be connected  to a VHF Radio that has AIS/DSC as part of the radio programming.

Make, It says NMEA out is all the info your AIS/DSC radio needs. Sorry about the confusion.

Roddy,
I believe that AIS needs a two-way communication which the 987 does not support.  The NMEA 0183 data is only an output.

NMEA out from HB unit Thur VHF radio.

Info received from other AIS/DSC radio will be displayed on the received radio, but not on the the 987 HB chart display.

The exchange of info is done by the VHF radio! Not by the HB unit.

Lets put it this way Greg, My 987 is hooked to a Standard H 2150 AIS/DSC radio info out is fine, the info from station XXXX is received by My radio and displayed on the radio screen (Lat/Lon,speed,heading,Call letters, Name,Distance between targets and if the other target received my transmission). But not on My 987 chart screen.

In reality I don't need to know the position of the other ship if I send out AIS/DSC disstress message that will repeat itself until CXL or power loss!

The same is true if a call is received by Me, It only takes a sec to look at the chart and plot a line and reply by VHF voice.

This is not a installation I would recommend, it nagates 50% of the AIS/DSC function.

A study of AIS/DSC VHF radio function is needed to understand all of the system can do.

My other boats have AIS/DSC VHF Thur HB unit with full function.

Roddy, some of our other units do support AIS functions but the 987c Si units do not.

Is there a reference list to see which does and which does not?
Or do we have to look at each individual unit documentation.

Well there is a FAQ about this on the Humminbird web site:
http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=1885

Frequently Asked Questions Do Humminbird products support AIS?

Humminbird's 858, 898, 958, 998, 1157, 1158, 1197 and 1198 will all support this feature.

Connecting an AIS to a Humminbird Unit

If your AIS ships with a pigtail connection, you can connect your Humminbird control head to it via the AS HHPGS

1.    Check the AIS installation guide to find the transmit, receive and ground wire colors
2.    Connect the wires on the AIS pigtail to the AS HHGPS according to the below chart.
3.    Heat shrink or tape the connections
4.    Heat shrink or tape the AS HHGPS red wire.
5.    Connect the AS HHGPS cable to the Humminbird unit at the RS232 port.

The chart mentioned above would not copy and paste correctly...

So much information, so little time to look everywhere.  Good thing this forum is here to help out HB...

Any particular reason that the 987 was picked to not support..?
Seems like a worthwhile feature.

Greg, Read the post. All I'm saying is that the NNMEA out will give limited function. Roddy

Chuck, the 987 was not “picked to not support” AIS.  It just never had that capability built into or added to it.

I guess that it could Roddy, depending on how you look at it.  I would bet that most would not see this as any sort of support for AIS, rather as support for the DSC function of a radio.  Now the radio you have it connected to may support AIS but not the unit by itself.

Make, I think that was a general statement for all of the units that received the 4.770 software and not specific to the 987c Si units.  Any unit having an active AIS communications port (connector) that has software version 4.770 and above would support the AIS function.  I could be wrong though as I have not personally connected a 987 unit up to an AIS system, so let us know how it works out for you.
