898c and 12 Humminbird 408550-1 12" 2KW Radome
« on: April 30, 2014, 05:47:02 PM »
I have the 898c SI and I'm looking at the 12" radar. Is there something I need to put between the unit and the radar dome? It says it comes with Ethernet connection. Does it just plug in the back of the 898 or do I need more hardware and if so what?

Thanks
Charlie

That's all you need Charlie if the Radar is the only Ethernet device you have connected to the 898c unit.
Be sure and update the software on your 898c Si unit so it will work with the radar.

Separate View only.
There is only one version of the 12-inch dome.  We also have a 21-inch dome and that is the picture that Cabela’s is showing though they do not state a manufacturer’s part number.  You had best contact Cabela’s to find out which it is:
AS-12RD2KW 12-inch dome, HB part # 408550-1
AS-21RD4KW  21-inch dome, HB part # 408560-1

Yep the one on Cabalas has wrong pic and wrong power says 4kW 12" is 2kW. I canceled my Cabalas order and went with CTD saved $300.  ;D

Ok one more question I upgraded my 898c to 6.6 but I don't see any views for radar? Do those only show up when you have the radar connected?
Thanks

Yes, unless you are running it in the Simulator mode.

I’m reading the instructions. The blue and green wires when you put them on a switch and turn the leans off does that shut the radar off i.e. make it safe? It says it does not shut the power off to the unit but I assume it turns the microwaves off right? Just want to make sure so I’m using it safely. I’m a first boat radar user here so sorry if this is a silly question.

It sounds like it shuts the radar down but it does not remove power from the radar itself.  I’ve never installed one myself and would probably hire someone to install it if I bought one.

I can install it. I was just looking for confermation that it shuts the radar down. I understand it does not turn the unit off but it sounds like it stops it from spinning. They don’t make it very clear in the instructions.  Just looking for a 100% confirmation on that. I’m going to install a switch between the leads. The install instructions are very straight forward and I understand the risk. I just replaced the whole 302 motor and VD transmission on my own. I think I can handle the radar install ;)

Charlie,

Visions of Basher from Ocean's 11 just before he set off the 'pinch' came to mind when you asked this question.

Now Im looking at mounting systems. Does the radar come with a plate? I'm thinking about one of these http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|344|2028703|2029038&id=1583040&cartId=5101791 vs. building my own out of 2" round SS and some tig welding. If I need to also get the plate http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|344|2028703|2029049&id=1583180&cartId=5101786 it starts to add up to where making my own sounds better. I have the SS any opinions or other mount options.

I have a pilot house the rooftop is 5.5" from the deck. I don't fish with any NBA players so I think 12" should be enough. Plus it will be off when we are out of the pilot house.

So here's a good one for ya. I took the boat out with the new 6.6 and had no sonar. I had the previous os on the card so just to check I reverted back to it and the sonar came back (better then ever on the new boat). I looked under accessory's on the older os 6.1 I think it is and the radar is listed. Is there a reason the 6.6 would not see my SI transducer on my 898c SI? What is the latest OS that will see it? Should I just stick with what I have since I see the radar listed, or are there updates I should have for the radar to work right/better.

Should I try and reload the 6.6 and see if it was just an upgrade fluke?

All of the software versions should see the transducer.  I think that I would re-download the current software version and install it again.

Just tried 6.6 again with new download and no go. I then tried 6.7 from the HB main support site and no go. I then downloaded 6.4 from here and it works with the sonar, but now is not seeing my speed wheel? Not sure what the problems are but each time I do it I'm worried I'm going to brick it. Going to leave it at 6.4 maybe the speed will show up when I'm in the water.

Any suggestions other then if it works don't fix it? Should the speed wheel show up as connected in the menu even if its not in the water? My 898 has never given me a single issue. I have updated it a few times up till 6.18 without issue, and then now I'm trying the newer stuff and its giving me troubles. Thanks for any more pointers.

Charlie,
Is this a mechanical paddlewheel type “speed wheel”?  If so, it has to be spinning to have an output and it has to have an output before it gets recognized as being connected by the unit.

Perfect thanks that makes me feel better about 6.4. I cannot get a sonar signal with anything higher. Have you had any reports of this with other 898c SI owners? The upgrade process I’m using is reset to default, boot and select yes to upgrade and no to don’t upgrade and it does its thing. Is there something special I should be doing that I’m not?

Charlie,
I have heard of  a few that lost sonar after upgrading the software in their units but it was related to a hardware issue if I am remembering correctly.  I do not remember that anyone has narrowed it down to a specific software version like you have.  If it were just software I would think that this and other forums would be filled with posts about it.

Sounds like you are upgrading the software correctly.

Charlie,
You didn’t have any other versions of software on the memory card when you did the updates did you?  We have seen this cause some strange problems.

Got the radar today and hooked it up to test and my 898 would not see it. I got to thinking and decided to reformat the card and re-download the 6.7 with my Antivirus OFF. Noted that the download took a little longer 10seconds instead of 2. Took the card out and upgraded and boom everything works sonar, radar, speed wheel ext. Stoked thought Id post what the fix for me was.

I'm thinking about adding this unit to my boat, could you comment on how well it works for you. I'm most interested in the under 2 mile range in dense fog (Puget Sound). Any feedback on the unit is much appreciated.

Thanks
Brian
