My Bird doesn’t show fish like my Lowrance
« on: September 03, 2019, 12:01:56 AM »
I have a Lowrance HDS 7 gen 3 on the bow mount Ultrexx. I have HB Helix 9 Mega SI on the wheel.  Yes, they are separated by 19ft, but the 2D info of each unit are quite different.  The HDS shows arc’s or partial arcs. The Bird shoes virtually nothing.  I have turned up the sensitivity. It doesn’t seem to make much difference.  Any words of wisdom?  Thanks,Sam

Im very interested in responses to this as well. although I own a Helix 10 SI G2N and an older 900 series HB SI. I have since uninstalled my 900 series (both Xducers were on the transom so had to run one or the other) but in limited side by side usage I had noticed  fewer arches with my Helix 10. I couldn't run them at the same time but when alternating it seemed like I was marking fewer fish with the Helix.

I now only have my Helix 10 installed so cant compare and have gotten used to my Helix markings. While I find I get more blank screens than I used to there are occasions where Im marking many fish so I had forgotten about the discrepancy between units.  I do find Im using significantly higher sensitivity and using Max Mode much more on the Helix 10 in order to mark fish compared to my 997 CSI.

I have assumed my Helix is very accurate and most of the time can cross reference fish I mark on the 2d with side and down imaging, but would still like to understand the descrepancies between the Helix/997/Lowrance as described by the original post if it exists

Try  ...:

*Medium CHIRP (which has a wider cone than High CHIRP)  ...
*Switchfire Max (and adjust Sensitivity)  ...
*Higher Chart Speed 7-10

I loaded the update with HB app last night.  The suggested changes and the update seem to help showing more fish/arcs. Thanks for the help.

I loaded the update as well.  There is a water column  sensitivity adjustment thats new. Values  1 to 3.  I set it to 3 but no idea what its supposed to do yet

I also tried the medium setting as suggested by Rickie. With that setting I get way more fish marked on my sonar which mire resembles my previous 997.
What i don't like about this setting it i lose a lot of image resolution.  Mush prefer the high chirp graphics. What alco concerns me is the huge disparity between the fish marked on medium vs high. High shows almost no fish in the sater whether trolling or anchored on any body of water vs med birp which shows huge fish populations. On med chirp i can turn sensitivity down to as low as 2 from 18 or so when swtighing between chirp med and high . Ive tried switchfire on and off for both chirps and the full sensitivity ranges for each.  I find is suspect to have so different markings.  Also whats the difference in cone width between med and high chirp?  Last time i read cone wodhts for the sta dard sonar xducer the diameter matched the depth.  For hi chirp seems it must be maybe a 1 ft cylinder to be missing all those fish i see on med chirp. Whether troll anchored or wlectric troll or gas troll the difference in marking vs blank screen is med chirp vs hi. I dont trust what im seeing for either now as they are polar opposites
