SI in deep water
« on: September 28, 2014, 03:21:43 AM »
Have someone tried SI in really deep water 80-100 m but the range to 25 m when looking for fish in the upper water column?

I have another brand and sometimes you get interference problem with the bottom in really deep waters.

We have to remember that distance in the SI image is "Range away from the xducer."..

This means that a SI Range setting of 25m would be displaying all the Range (away from the xducer) to all the points 25m away from the xducer within the SI beam slice...

If your "target" area is, indeed within this 25m Range (away from the xducer)...regardless of the actual water's depth ...then the display will show the echoes detected within this 25m "range away from the xducer"....

If your interference problem is from overlapping beams (crosstalk)...the interference may still show on the display ...because the SI Range setting is not "stopping" the beam from going out past the SI Range setting...it's just telling the unit not to "display" echoes out past the SI Range setting...

I was a bit unclear about my question. I don't have a problem understanding the SI display.

When I'm going with my Sc on my lowrance I get sometimes double echo on my screen when I'm going in typical 80-100 m and SC range to 25m. My scroll speed is also lower because of the longer distance the signal has to travel.
I also get this interference with my 2d on Lowrance and Garmin units .

Is there any problem using Onix in those conditions?

My apologies for misunderstanding your question...

The ONIX uses the same frequencies as the HB core units...

Anytime sonar beams overlap using the same frequency ... There can be crosstalk...

This can be the 2d "cone shaped" beams ... Or even the "thin slice" SI beams if they are oriented such that they overlap...

The SI frequencies (of separate units) can be set at different frequencies to minimize crosstalk ...but the 200kHz 2d frequency can not be shut off ...(even if the "Beam Select" menu is set to 83kHz only)....

Is the "double echo" you speak of showing in the water column ...or over the entire display ...??

Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing...??
