source set up 798 998 ethernet
« on: April 21, 2013, 04:10:41 PM »
Just wondering if I have the systems set up properly for gps set up. I want them to work off there own gps recievers. I have the 998 in the console set to console and the 798 set to bow witch in the front. They seem to be working off there own recievers but i get alot of jumping around when i try to fish a previous waypoint i have marked. I have my track interval and track min. distance set as low as they go. I was also wondering what is prefered for a chart orentation when fishing waypoints north, course, or head up.

What are you meaning by “i get alot of jumping around when i try to fish a previous waypoint i have marked”?

Are the coordinates on the units jumping around?
If so, is the boat moving?
Is there anything that could be blocking the satellite signal from getting to the GPS Receiver (including yourself)?
What are the Fix Type, EPE and HDOP numbers on the GPS Diagnostic View showing when this happens?

Nothing is blocking the GPS signal on the 798 or 998, I have all the rescent updates for both units. The chart keeps flipping back and fourth and it makes it hard to relate to waypoint. Meaning is its to the right forward or left. You can come up on it on the right but when you keep the boat stationary the chart will keep rotating when the chart updates. Thats why i reduced my track int. and track min. distance to minimum. Am I on the right track here with my set up and source set up with the ethernet and the 2 units. Maybe I'm doing to much experamenting. Should i keep the chart set to north up to keep the chart locked from rotating I have it set to head up now.  You have to select the unit you want recieving the gps signal in the source set up so they work off their own reciever correct.  I don't want to read the signal from 18 ft away on the 998 gps puck on the back of the boat while I'm on the front of the boat.

I just read some guys are having problems with the new update. My 998 unit is new and updated it right away after I put it on the boat. I also updated my 798. Could this be part of my problem? Should I change it back to the previous software.

In all 3 chart settings (North Up, Course Up, Head Up)...The chart defaults to "North Up" when the GPS receiver does not detect any movement (donut speed below 0.6mph)...

This is why your chart keeps spinning around....when your boat speed drops below 0.6mph..the GPS detects no movement, so the chart is "defaulting to North Up"..

You can eliminate this chart spinning effect (below 0.6mph) by setting the chart to "North Up"...which keeps the chart oriented with North at the top of the chart at all speeds...

When the setting is at this "North Up" setting...:
*North (on the water) will always be toward the top of the screen...
*East   (on the water) will always be toward the right of the screen...
*South (on the water) will always be toward the bottom of the screen..
*West  (on the water) will always be toward the left of the screen...

Example: (in the "North Up" setting)..
*Observing the position of the boat icon (donut below 0.6mph) on the chart ...and you want to navigate to a point on the chart that is to the left of the boat icon on the chart you must navigate your boat Westward (on the water) to reach that point of interest or waypoint..

Alloutdoors,
Yes you have to set up which GPS Receiver each unit will use.

In the “Head-up” or “Course-up” setting, the unit will orient the chart to the direction it thinks you are going.  This direction comes from the GPS data.  This works great when moving at moderate and fast speeds, but moving very slowly or when stationary the GPS cannot reliably determine the course or heading of the boat.  If the GPS does not indicate boat movement is a specific direction, the chart will reorient to the North-up position.  This is why the chart is flipping around (because of very slow or no boat movement).  You can purchase and install one of the new GPS-HS GPS Receivers with Heading Sensor or you can set your unit to “North-up”.
