A couple questions
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:34:08 PM »
So I am looking to replace my Matrix 37 with QB with a new 798ci SI.
1) Does the 798 have the capability to move the cursor over to a target on the side scan image  and mark it like you can on the 998 machines? Could not find the answer in the manual or posted videos.
2) If so, how accurate is the waypoint?
3) Does the 798 and Matrix 37 use the same base mount?
4) It also looks like I could replace my XT-6-TB-90-T QBeam transducer with a XHS 9 HDSI 180 T side scan transducer and have side scan on my Matrix 37 for about 200 bucks. The specs, cable, and power are the same except for the beam widths. Has anyone tried this? I want to find railcars, not bushes.

1) Yes
2) Close enough to find rail cars.
3) They did, but there might be a change with the recent ethernet models.
4) Don't think so.  It doesn't make a 400TX into SI, which has wide side.
If it bends my rod, I'm a happy fisherman.

Actually, the SI transducer WILL work on the matrix 37.  You do not get all the SI features, but it does do pretty good.  In fact, I believe the Humminbird SI patent shows a matrix unit using SI.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still going to buy the 798 SI and keep the Matrix 37 as a backup. Good know the transducer will work on either.

2) If so, how accurate is the waypoint?

Depends a little on the deep and if the bottom is flat or slop. And it also depends on how far the target is from the keel line. But in real life I have learned that in a deep of less than 10 m and in a distance about 30m from keel-line, you will get an accuracy about 7m (20ft). I think that is very good and close enough.

If I find something interesting, I drive 3-5 times over the object, and put an new waypoint  from a different angel to the target. Then I'm can be sure that the object is somewhere under the "cluster of waypoints".

I'm still going to buy the 798 SI and keep the Matrix 37 as a backup.

That's a good choice! The electronics in a boat usually gets broke when you need them at most. In that case you will be very happy to have i backup
