AASU Student Found, truck pulled from water
« on: April 27, 2010, 11:29:13 PM »
Savannah, GA.  The Body of the missing AASU student, Bryce Tarter has been found.  His truck was found in the water today at Bells Landing within 1/2 mile of the AASU campus where he was last seen.  Link to story: http://www.wtoc.com/global/story.asp?s=12383933

Quote
Camden County sheriff's deputies found Bryce's truck as they were helping the Department of Natural Resources search the waterway for the missing teen.  "We were in the process of going over everything that's been done and rechecking everything," said AASU Police Chief Wayne Willcox.  "They came up here and spent about an hour and a half.  On the last trip they spotted something using a side scan sonar, they sent a diver to investigate, that's when they found the truck."

Authorities contacted Bryce's family when the truck was discovered. Back in February, authorities searched the water around Bell's Landing but nothing was found.

What surprises me is that this area was searched 2 or 3 times prior to today!  Here is a picture from Bing Maps showing the waterway.  This search could have been done in 1 pass!  I don't know what side scan sonar was being used, but you know the Humminbird would have been perfect for the job!

Chuck (Sonar2000) and I were asked to come in on this project after they had cleared this area and expanded out but never got the chance to search the areas around the campus.  I had a feeling and even mentioned this to Chuck, that he would most likely be found within 2 miles of campus!

I am glad they have brought some closure to the family, but the cause of death is yet to be determined.

One of the issues that Robert and I had on our 1st trip to the area was what exactly had been done locally and in the near vicinity of the last seen point.  We were assured that the area had been checked and cleared and now they were wanting to expand. We ran our sonar in designated area and came up with out any targets.  The si images were clear enough and with enough definition to be able to issue a 99% probablility that the object of search was not in the search area.
Sonar2000 came back on another weekend and was asked to expand the search area.  This we did and again with out any targets found.
As Robert said several times we asked for a clearer definnition of what had been done in the immediate area. We were told that the area had been checked several times and the missing person must be farther out or away from the campus.
Search not under our direct control can be a bit trying but we can only do what is asked.
I will from now on want more early information and what has been done. I wish Robert and I had been a bit more forward with our concern on the immediate area and exact missions.
At least the family can start the healing process.
It will now be interesting to see the "cause" of death.
