can not get depth at anything higher than 7 mph
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:55:20 AM »
Can anyone help me?  Transducer seems to work when going slow however when driving fast the reasdings are all over the place.
Just installed the 898 so not too sure if the transducer should be tilted more down or up...at the moment it is as close to parallel as possible.
Thank you for the help

There are a number of postings on the forum that deal with the loss of signal above trolling speeds.
Try searching the forum for similar topics.
In general the transducer is sensitive to placement on a boat. There are sweet spots and on some the faster speeds do not work at all. A second thru the hull transducer may be the prefered installation for  getting around this issue.
The search tab is on the home page upper right.

kmercer,

Please give us a little bit more information about your installation.  Type of boat, hull, etc.  Installation pictures would really be helpful.

Thanks,

I have a new 898 and when I get to 4 mph...I start to loose info as well on the side image screen myself.  Best is 2 to 3 mph.  I also have a second ducer on the opposite side of the motor and works good there.  One thing it doesn't do is give a good digital reading until the boat moves above 6 to 10 mph.

otherwise, my side image works really well ant idel speed only and I am happy with that unless there is also something I can shange.

My S I Ducer is about 1 to 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of the boat.

Calli1,
I believe that you have the same issue as kmercer does: transducer placement.  The transducer has to have a constant supply of air-free water flowing across it to maintain a digital depth readout as well as a bottom reading display.  With your transducers above the bottom edge of the hull you are reading through turbulent water.  What transducer combination are you running: the Si + 2D transducer combination with the AS-Si-DB-Y cable or the Si + Si transducer combination with the AS-Si-LR-Y cable?  I’m going to venture a guess here and assume (uh oh…) that it is the Si + Si combination.  You need to try lowering the right Si transducer to see if that helps get better readings at all speeds.
