Unit not saving settings
« on: December 18, 2012, 01:02:12 PM »
Hi all.

After personalising my unit eg. choosing a specific view preset on the view preset keys, the preset parameters are not saved after the unit is switched off and on again. Sometimes the side imaging range also changes after unit is switched off and on again. This is really annoying since I have to go through the whole menu to personalise the unit everytime after switching it off and on again. :-[
The unit is hard wired to the battery and does not have a separate isolator switch.
Am I missing something? :-\
All help much appreciated ;)

Make sure you are in advanced mode and not in
simulation mode.

The 3 preset keys should stay the way you set them,
until you change them (hold each one down until
you here the bell).

There are some settings that are not saved.
Not sure which ones, though.
You will have to set them each time you use
the unit.

Thanks a lot ITGEEK!

Will have a look at the mode the unit is operating in. The unit has so many settings one can choose, still learning something new everytime I use it.

Maybe I should just keep the unit switched on during the entire fishing session, even when anchored so I don't loose any settings I changed.

Thanks again! :D

ITG is right: not all menu settings are remembered by the unit, but most are.  The preset keys should be remembered.  As long as the unit was not in the point of sale simulation mode and you are powering the unit off with the power button there should be no problem with it remembering the menu settings.  If this is still happeneing you may want to contact the local Humminbird retailer and see about getting your unit tested.

If you update the software the unit should reset all menus back to the factory settings.

Thanks HG
Will keep an eye on the unit.
Another problem I encountered when taking a snapshot, is that the unit will just switch off and on again. :-\

Try using another different SD memory card and see if the same thing happens.
What size and brand are you using?

Check your power connections and your boat battery.  Low power conditions can have some strange effects on our units.  No loose or corroded connections – all should be soldered, clean and tight.  This goes for the battery connections and the fuse and fuse holder too.

Yup having the same problem with mine.
Every time I turn unit on and off with the units power switch every setting returns to factory default. Thats adding 10 mins work every time  I switch on!
Can't take it back to supplier he's 6000 miles away
(SD card formatted and will record and take screen shots. Latest firmware update).

I should add the problem only arose with the firmware update I did yesterday

You could try loading the older software version that you had in your unit to see if it remembers the settings, then re-download the current software and see if it happens again.  I have not seen any other reports of this so either you got a bad download of software or the component within your unit that remembers this has gone bad.

Thanks will the unit give me the option of loading an earlier firmware version from an sd card? I presume earlier version can be found some where on here. Thanks for the help

Some earlier versions are found here on the downloads. If not just ask here and we will try to find a copy for you..
Hints. never have any version of download on the sd card except for the one you want to load. In fact it is a good idea to only have the download and nothing else even waypoints.
Make sure you never go back beyond the 1st version put on the unit.
always restore factory defaults as a general suggestion prior to putting the code on you unit.
Never get in a hurry installing new code or downlevel.

Well the humminbird sorted itself out ultimately. It got itself into a reboot cycle on the splash page not even giving me chance to press exit or select menu. I had to do a power disconnect to turn unit off. Gave it a rest then turned it on with transponder attached sitting in a drum of water. Took 3 cycles and then calmed down and works perfectly retaining memory settings.

Just a thought did the 798 reset everytime because I powered it up without the transducer attached at home. Not inclined to experiment now all is good.

It should start up fine without the transducer connected.  It should tell you the transducer is not connected and to press the menu button for startup options.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Vortex,
If you were powering the 798 up without a transducer connected it should have automatically went into the point of purchase simulator mode.  This mode has programmed menu settings and a built-in simulator for the showroom floor (or practicing when not on the water).  It will reset each time you power the unit up or two minutes after the last button press.

You can get by the point of purchase simulator mode by powering the unit on and while it is showing the Title screen (shows something like: “Humminbird 798ci Si”) press the MENU button and selecting “Simulator” from the three options shown.  This will put the unit into the forced simulator mode where it will remember the menu settings you make or have made while the transducer was connected.

Thanks Greg

Yes I found that forced sim option from searching the forum and seeing (probably your) information posted earlier. Must admit I didin't know of it until then. For a while the unit still lost settings in forced sim mode.
Nontheless all is good now. Despite owning the unit for a year it only got its first real test during the last  weekend, Trout fishing on lake Waikaramoana and a day fishing at sea. The unit behaved perfectly and the brilliance of the screen gave me full readability with the monitor facing upwards into direct midday sunlight (mid summer here). My colleague's older gen lowerance was completely washed out and unreadable in shade.
Just thought it worth ending on a positive!
