I have the 898 and 858.. Do I need to run both GPS pucks? I had the 898 first than added the 858. I want to be able to mark way points on one and have it come up on both.... Do I have to put the 858s transducer on also? I thought I could get away with running only the SI transducer and than just connecting the two with the Ethernet cable... But its not working... What more do I need to do too get these bad boys too work together?? thanks everyone..

You can only share sonar with like units. IE: 998/898/798, etc. Your 858 can get 2d sonar from the 898s transducer but that will be it. No DI since DI units are different from SI/DI units.
You can go with one GPS puck. Just set the one that doesn't have the puck connected via the Ethernet settings to the one with the puck connected.

Im just not sure how too set it up in the settings. Im a newbie too humminbird units...
-
I would start by checking the software version each unit is running. Humminbird recommends running the latest version of software in your units. For the 858c and 898c Si units this would be version 6.420
If you are only going to use the sonar on one unit, there is no need to use two GPS Receivers other than to have one as a back-up in case the first one fails.
Download the Ethernet manual that is posted on this web site: http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?action=downloads;cat=24 (http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?action=downloads;cat=24)
It should help you with connections and how to set your units up.

Just bought a SD card on ebay. Im going to update it and see if that helps... thanks guys for all your help..

Check to make sure the connection between the two units is valid and that they are in fact linked. Check out page 10 of the ethernet networking manual and make sure the network menu shows.

Where do i get the network manual...
-
Will the updates be the same for the 858 and the 898?
-
The version numbers of the updates may be the same, but they are
different machines.
You will most likely need a separate download for
each.

He meant the Ethernet manual.
Look in my post above:

ITG is correct: the version number may be the same but the actual update files for each model unit are different.

Which is why HB needs to get a handle on their naming conventions. The current 48 charc names mean nothing to us in the field..
1197_6.180 is more reliable information and can be meaningful.
239a987cd740839fg83k749dfki48204mn8uh7d6.bin on the other hand defies any ability here to know what level of release for what machine..
