Publication of sonar images of the human body.
« on: January 12, 2012, 01:28:58 PM »
Hello to the SAR community,

Sorry for the English, it's the computer ......

Publication of sonar images of the human body.

I think that this is not a problem. In these pictures there is nothing to recognize, whether male or female, not even a breath of information. What is shown on television, mostly in prime time, yet optimum in detail the violation. This is reprehensible and has nothing to do with information.
The image should be professional and informative comments to be short. After all, who works in the field of SAR can read the images and just want to know: how, where and with what.
What is certainly not one to image the exact location or personal name.
A people search takes a lot of experience with the device and the medium of water and the ground. Knowing how to search and very, very patient.
All this will not give away, but it's a job like any other, but only with hard dollars.

As an example, and Real:
Figure 1, divers on the ground.
Figure 2, cycle on seabed
Figure 3,? Where is the diver?

All are equipped with HB1197, Towfish with 115m cable, 455 kHz, depth 8m, 20m Range

Now I wish you continued patience and luck in finding .......

Thank you SeaRover for the pictures!

Pictures like these gives us information of what to look for when searching for missing persons or divers!

These pictures are very clear and the target can be found easily. Would be interesting to see more complicated
situations were the targets will not be so easy to locate.

KIMI, you are right in that the picture of a single target on the bottom by itsself it not all that hard to find. It is when the bottom is littered with rocks, trees and other lake debris that makes it so very hard.

Thank SeaRover

This is a good contribution to the debate over the publication of sonar images found people. I too am of the opinion, that such images in any way violate the privacy rights of individuals but are instructive, for the case that one has to interpret even such a picture.

Right, the diver is at the top right and bottom left.
It is a turning point here.

In the third image, right side, halfway down, it appears to me that the shadows of the two larger targets
are in front of them instead of behind it. In image one, the shadow appears normal. What am I missing?

Newkids4si, That is the way a hole in the botton will appear. SI angle does not enter hole and reflect back so it shows as a blank spot. Roddy

Roddy and NewK....good observation..
that is important for SAR guys to remember that SI does not look down into a hole.
when you scan what appears to be a hole then you will have to go back over with 2d to make a target determination..

Roddy and Chuck-- Thanks for the reply. Now I'm wondering if that is an incoming stream/river on the right and those shadows are scour holes behind something.
That would help explain the shadows " in front " of the item.

You could look at your track and on one of the nav screens see if there is a drainage ditch or creek or ?????

If I had your recording I could maybe help a little more..If you wanted to share it..

Hello,

During the accident, we had snow melt and flooding
with a visibility of 0.5 meters and a depth of 8-12 m

Giving here the solutions for the 3rd Sonar image based on photographic images.
The pictures I've done in the summer months later, on a clear day.

Hope everything is visible.

Greetings .........

Up jumps the Devil. When expanding your blue solutions shot, there it was -- 180˚ turn--. This has bit me in the butt SO many times. Maybe I can save some of the newer users the trouble of learning this the way I did. Just because the boat path is displayed as a straight line on the units screen, recording or snap shot, doesn't mean that is how the boat traveled. An example; while making a recording of a sunken boat we found, I would make straight passes over it and continue on maybe another 75'. Then make a 180˚ turn to record from a different direction. What I didn't take into consideration was the SI range was set to 125'. During the turn the SI beam would sweep over the boat again displaying it from a different orientation. You will be so sure there is another boat that you will spend an hour ( LOL ) looking for it.

Very good point NWK4....

I went thru the exact same thing in the beginning of not remembering how far out we were set to scan.

In humviewer I now set the display to show the boat track while looking at the scan for the first time..

Thur the use of Humviewer is how I discovered the error of my ways. I now use the 3 views in Humviewer. Lower left will be the boat track. Upper left will be 2D.
Right side will be SI, Right SI, Left SI,or  DI. Often I will spot something in 2D that I would miss in SI. Once you know to look for it, you can change to DI, RT/LT SI to make it stand out.

Yep you are right in the 3 view screen and then changing to what you need for a good view..
Depending on our target quest we use the three or just the 2 view..

Nice thing about humviewer is the easy way to change views...

Good work Rickard.

The SAR guys should look at these references and see how different units display targets.
Not all units show the same detail.

Differences in resolution, frequency, depth and surface or tow fish make each its own usefulness.

One of the interesting things about sonar is to be able to clear an area as well as pinpoint a target..

Sometimes it may take several different products to find the target.

Thanks for taking the time tgo research this information.
