797c2 si , can't see wood..
« on: March 12, 2010, 12:17:28 PM »
Hello All,

Great to see a forum on HB SI.

I have a 797c2 SI with a XTM 9 SI 180 T ducer, got it new in Feb 07.
With the SI I get good hard bottom images, rocks, foundation, riprap etc.. but I cannot and never have been able to see any kind of wood, brush piles, logs, stumps, treetops which I know is there all ranging from 5ft to 100ft of water.

Is this the nature of the 797 as it is a small unit or am I doing something wrong. One thing I will admit I have never updated the software on this unit sense I have had it, don’t know if this would help or not.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont think its something wrong whit your equipment, or the model (797) you are using. I have my self get god results whit the same model.

One thing to remember is that wood can consist up to over 90 % of water. That means that the signal can in some cases go right throug the wood. The thing is different if the surface of the wood contains, something elese than wet wood. For example, shells, sand, gases etc..

But if you dont see the wood try to scan a wider area, and you get an other angel, and then you can maybe see the shadows.

Wood, wooden ships, have always been a difficult material to find ewen whit proffessional equipments. Soft wood on a soft seebed can be almost invisible.

But try to tune your unit for best performance. Practise on something you know what it should look like.

In the picture below you can see a broken shipwreck that sunk in the middle 1700 century. In fact there are a lot of wood down at the seebed. But you can still only see the shadows!

Hundred hour of practicing whit theese toys is still only the beginig..

You should upgrade to the latest software. You are actually missing out on a lot of new improvements. To see brush piles and other wood you need to =tweak your sensitivity and slow your screen speed down. A good many old brush piles simply look like a mound of mud or siilt[

Freedom isnt free, if you want to know the real cost visit a national cemetery or VA Hospital.
