Title: What to do with electronics already onboard
Post by: johnbaker on March 03, 2010, 07:51:58 AM
Have a Lowrance 520c w/gps on the boat I will be putting on a HB 998c when it gets here.  Any reason to leave on the 520c?

If it has good cartography, I would use it for the mapping while keeping the HB screens on SI & DI.  The HB will still record the mapping (when in the record mode), so you will still have the best of both worlds.

You may want to play with different configurations before removing it.

As long as you have the 520  you have a backup in case of failure of primary.  Always a good idea.  While it would be nice to be all humminbird, take advantage of any eq that you do have.  In this economy every thing counts.  As was stated you can run one for sonar and one for GPS.  Chuck

Keep it there at least as a backup! In the beginning its a tool you already can handle, during the time you learn to handle the new unit.
Its also good the let one of the units do the navigating, and the other one dooing the sidescanning job.

And its newer wrong to have two units of ewerything in a boat.

Once when we where going out to our cabin, thats located on an island, my chartplotter shows that boat was going about 45 degrees out of the course. Somethings didnt feel right. My compass and my second gps shows that my direction was correct. Just at this time I once and for all needed the navigation system. It was dark and rain. I couldnt see the coastline att all. I choose to follow my compass.

In a situation like this you get real pist! ( at least if you got your wife on board!)

Later I found out that the fault in my plotter was the electric cable, an lighterconection cabel, that was allmost broke. It seems that when the voltage dropps to low, the the GPS-chartplotter didnt work properly anymoore?

If I had navigated by the plotter, I would for shure, in five minutes, had hit something I dont want to hit.

That was a lesson that shows me, that ewen a good quality unit can fail in a moment when you dont want it to happen!

I am convinced.  I will keep it.  Now, gotta think of an excuse for wife who I think I told I would sell it and buy down the cost of the 998c.  Wonder if she will remember.  ;D

Amen Kimi!
Been there, done that.... ;)

@John: Tell her that no one even wanted to pay a cent for your "stone age" old fishfinder and you didn't want to hassle to get the cables out and all the stuff. And how lucky you are that you now have a top rated and high speed fishfinder. "Life's much safer now honey, believe me...." ;D

For the most part no one will pay a fair price, so what Harry is say is really true.
