Using 1199 SI transducer with Onix
« on: June 27, 2016, 11:41:41 PM »
I recently had my 1199 SI unit stolen. I just bought a Onix 10 NT SI to replace it. So now I have an extra 1199 transducer and was wondering if I could use it as a second transducer with Onix. I believe its the "XHS 9 HDSI 180 T" transducer. I wanted to mount it to the trolling motor and use the Onix transducer on the stern. I have a few questions about this setup.

1: Would the older XHS 9 HDSI 180 T work with Onix?
2: Can I connect two transducers using what I have heard people call the  "Y cable"? I have also seen a switch(TS3) which is supposed to allow switching between two transducers but the Humminbird site does not say whether its compatible with Onix.If both options are feasible, what is the difference and which setup is the better approach to use?
2: Would I be able to switch between the two transducers or use them together? Ideally, I would like to be able to set it up so I get my down imaging from the trolling motor transducer (when deployed) and use the stern transducer for the side imaging and setup the views so that I can see feed from both. If not, I would like to be able to switch between the two to use the trolling motor transducer when the trolling motor is deployed and use the stern transducer when the trolling motor is stowed.

I appreciate the help and guidance. I hope it is possible so at least I can use the leftover transducer and not have to lose it as well...

The ONIX xducer cable ends are 14pin round connectors ...
The XHS 9 HDSI 180 T is a 7pin house shaped connector ...

There is this adapter cable ...
https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.humminbird.com/Products/AD-1429/&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwj35L-g48rNAhUEQiYKHWtFAx8QFggEMAA&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNHz67opQem3Ft0lCwI9wQZh1zxPHQ

The down imaging is non functional when using the AD 1429 because there is no dedicated DI channel pin/wire in the core series SI xducers (nor any of the house shaped Y or adapter cable connectors when connected to a SI xducer) ...

The HB TS3 switch is also the 7pin house shaped xducer connectors ... So the ONIX xducer port would have to be adapted with the AD 1429 in addition to the HB TS3 switch (and DI on the ONIX would still be non functional by the same reason as above) ...

It would be possible to use the stock XT 14 20 HDSI T and the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T with the AS 14 SILR Y cable still using the AD 1429 on the leg that the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T is connected to ... But I don't have any idea how the performance would be ...

Thank you for the explanation. Based on your response, I have a couple of more questions. Is the TS3 switch required for a dual transducer setup or the unit itself can detect and manage two transducers? If its not required and I can simply use the 2 transducers using the Y cable and the adapter for the 7 pin connector, how does the unit determine where to get what input from? Is there a setting which I could use to configure it to use the front transducer (7pin) for side and 2D when deployed but switch back to the stern sonar for all three functions(2D,side and down)?
thank you again for your help with this.

The HB Y cables basically reroute the wires from the transmitters to the piezoes ...there is no switching involved ...

The AS SIDB Y cable (and AS 14 SIDB Y cable) is used with a SI xducer and a Dual Beam xducer ...
*Left SI, Right SI, Temp will come from the connected SI xducer ...
*2d will come from the connected Dual Beam xducer ...

The AS SIlR Y cable (and AS 14 ASLR Y cable) is used with 2 SI xducers ...
*Right SI, 2d, Temp will come from the connected right SI xducer ...
*Left SI will come from the connected left SI xducer ...

The HB TS3 switch actually switches all the data channels from one xducer to the other xducer ... (again the HB TS3 switch has the 7pin house shaped connector ends) ...

Thank you again for a great explanation. So essentially, in order to get what I want to do(as explained above) I need a switch which has 14 pin connecters which does not exist OR use the 7 pin switch but lose the down imaging on both transducers. Hopefully there are plans to release a 14 pin switch now that the new units are using 14 pin transducers.

Correct ... HB doesn't make a 14pin switch ...
-----

You could use a 14pin extension cable and fairly easily "plug and unplug" one xducer at a time ...
https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.humminbird.com/Products/EC-14W10/&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwjVwMSx5NjNAhUGFR4KHZtDB8kQFggRMAU&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNHl9pK15EIdS83ze4zms9kjHtzCgg

(You would still need the AD 1429 when connecting the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ... And down imaging would still not work when this scenario is cabled) ...

The DI transmitter should be shut off if connecting the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and AD 1429 so the that the DI transmitter isn't firing to an open channel ...

Thank you very much again Rickie,

This is a certainly an interesting idea and a cheap one! :). Is there any danger if I leave the down imaging to continue firing besides not getting the signal?

HB always recommends shutting off a transmitter that is firing to an open circuit (no piezo at the end of that wire channel) ...

On core units, controlling on/off for transmitters is done in the "Connected Transducer" "Menu" under the Sonar tab (selection is basically telling the unit which wire channel to send ping signals thru) ...

On ONIX, controlling on/off for transmitters is done under the "Sonar Source" "Menu" ...

BTW ... I have yet to read any report of a transmitter being fried from pinging thru an open circuit ... But I guess it's good insurance ...

OK. I think i will take the safe route and turn the down imaging off when switching to the 7 pin transducer. Thank you
