Humminbird 998c Problem
« on: July 23, 2014, 12:52:20 PM »
I was just out on the water the other day, had just sat down to idle to a place nearby. I looked at my graph and noticed the screen was mildly dimming or flashing almost like the unit wasn't getting enough power. After about a minute, it dimmed out to the point I could only read it if I was sitting there looking straight at it. Couldn't see it while I was standing up and fishing. So I went to check all my connections, everything looked good. Shut the unit on and off a couple times. Nothing. On my way home, I stopped by a buddies house and hooked up my unit to his wires, it didn't make a difference. Obviously the problem is within my unit.

Played around with it some more once I got home and put the boat in the garage. The screen is now even darker than it was before, and even with it being darker in my garage, I cannot read anything on it now.

After a few times of shutting it on and off I noticed that when you first turn it on and the started up screen for a second or two will be bright as it should be. This is where is shows the Humminbird logo. While the screen is bright for that second or two, the lights behind the buttons will be off. After that second or two the screen goes dim and unreadable while the lights on the buttons turn back on. After a few more seconds, the "Humminbird, Now Loading" screen pops up bright, again only for a second or two, and again, the lights behind the buttons shut off while the screen is bright. After that, the screen dims out completely for the rest of the time and the lights on the buttons are fine.

Even hooked my buddies unit up to my boat, and it works fine. So my problem is within my unit for sure. The unit is about a year and 7 months old. Not much use until the past 9 or 10 months.

Any suggestions on what to try before calling Humminbird support would be appreciated.
Also, I have never updated the software on it FYI.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums crazyboutbass.

Sounds like you have narrowed down the problem to the 998c unit itself.  Not anything that you can do at this point but send it in to Humminbird and let them fix it.
