What do you folks do to review your finds?
Buy a separate power cord and inverter and sit in the office is what I am thinking. Any of you do that?
-
It is very convenient to view HB stuff in the house...(indeed you will need a separate power cord and a AC/DC converter with a minimum 1amp output...don't forget a 3 amp fuse in the positive wire..)

I also use Humviewer...

Laptop charging cords are generally of good quality and just about everywhere. Hook that up to a HB power cord and a inline fuse, and youre good to go.

I made a power cord as described in multiple posts to use my finders inside the house. It works great on my 788CI HD DI but I get a low voltage warning on my 998 C SI. Do you thin k I need a larger cord like a computer power cord as mentioned above? I used a typical AC/DC adapter 12v output dc.

The inverter needs to be a minimum 1amp (1000ma) 12v output rated ... 2 or 3a is even better ...
What amp output is your inverter ...??

1000 ma 12v with a 3 amp in-line fuse

Which power cable did you use SkeeterMatt?
Did you solder the electrical connections?
-
Greg, I used the HB PC 10 power cord. I didn't solder the connections I used the crimp style connectors that the wire goes into each end then electrical taped it all. Why would the 788 work but not the 998 ? I may need a better ac/dc converter, this one came from ebay and was made in china.

The 998 most likely draws more current to operate ...(Plus you really need the PC 11 with bigger stranded copper wire) ...
Try to get the unit booted up with your present inverter ...
Then check the voltage on the unit by setting one of the Readout boxes to Voltage ...note how much voltage the unit is reading ...
Then press the Power button one quick time and select the Backlight menu and turn the backlight down ...
If the voltage reading in the Readout box increases ... This should tell you if you need a bigger current (amp output) inverter ...

The 998c Si unit does draw more current than the 788ci HD DI model does. You may well end up needing to use the heavier wire gauge PC-11 power cable.
If you can, solder the wire to wire connections. Lose connections will rob your unit of the power it needs to operate.

Get something like this and you will have all the power you need .... http://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-PC-6-120AC-Power-Converter/dp/B0012BL8LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1426118306&sr=1-1&keywords=Schumacher+PC-6+120AC+to+6A+12V+DC+Power+Converter (http://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-PC-6-120AC-Power-Converter/dp/B0012BL8LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1426118306&sr=1-1&keywords=Schumacher+PC-6+120AC+to+6A+12V+DC+Power+Converter)

Well after my little experiment with the "indoor power cable" I took the units out today and they are both messed up. They looked good in simulator mode but on the water today the 998 wouldn't read depth, show any 2d sonar save screen images or show any DI and the DI and 2D on the 788 looked pixelated. The Nav screens looked fine. Neither works well in simulator mode now either. Should I try re-installing the current software versions on that are on them? This is the first time they have been on the water in a couple months so I tried getting the bubbles off the transducers in the water but that didn't help.

SkeeterMatt,
Do you know of anyone else who has a Humminbird Side Imaging model unit and/or a Humminbird DI model unit that you could cross-test with? This would show quickly whether the problem is in the control heads or the transducer or power on you boat.
-
I may be able to try the 998 on Monday, the only thing I did was re-attach the y cable to the through hull transducer. I guess it would cause interference? I used two SD cards, that I have used in the past, to up load the same way point file into each unit before this trip. I formatted them both with Humminbird PC first then loaded the waypoints. Would a corrupt file do this? That's why I was thinking of re-installing the software version. The units are receiving 13v from the boat.
-
I don't think that I have ever heard of a corrupt waypoint file causing a depth reading problem. If it makes you feel better though you could do a Format Directories and erase any waypoint, route and track data off the unit. Just make sure you still have them on your PC.
-
what's that? I deleted all waypoints etc... reset to default. 998 looks good on simulator but 788 DI looks "hot"
They passed self test, if that helps
Would there be any harm in re-loading same software version or maybe previous version?
-
I have two 6v batteries daisy chained and an old spare power cable tied in. I really only use it for updating software and reviewing my waypoints if I'm going to rename them or even get rid of them. The only issue I have with it is the power cable doesn't have anything to hold it securely, so any little bump and it'll lose power. I clear the room when updating software so the kids can't ensue their disaster to them lol!

I just installed my unit. Made power cord with disconnects. can take off boat and bring in house. bought 12 volt batt from cabelas for 20 bucks or so that disconnects plug into. The small square ones that slide on. The batt is small and is used for the high power flashlights and other applications. all works good. Joe

SkeeterMatt,
The Format Directories function is found under the Setup menu tab. This is the same thing as formatting a memory card as it does more than just erases the waypoints, routes and tracks.
There should be no harm in loading an older version software and then loading the current version of software again as long as you don’t go too far back in software versions and nothing goes sideways while you are reprogramming your units. You should never load an older version of software into your Humminbird units that what originally came it them.

Thank you sir!
