I did a big software update oops with my 997c...need help
« on: December 23, 2014, 03:57:38 PM »
I had a 798si on my last boat, 2 years ago, and that was my first sd card ready fish finder I have ever owned. I followed the instructions when I did the software update, and everything was fine.

I just bought a 997c for my new boat and it had the old software version 4.9 on it. I downloaded the 6.3 onto the SD card, and me being the dummy, totally forgot to put all settings to default. I forgot I left the SD card in it and when I powered it on, it asked me to update it to version 6.3 from the current version of 4.9. I wasnt thinking and went through the process.

Now, its stuck on the "loading" screen. No buttons work and I can only shut off power by unplugging it.

I need help for being a idiot lol.

Thanks guys.

Give the update plenty of time to install. Sometimes these processors can be slow.  I don't know the average time to do this but on my 1197 is has taken 1/2 hour... Reset to factory defaults.  turn off unit. turn on unit insert SD card and wait....Make surer you only have the update on the sd card....nothing else........Chuck

I never reset the factory default settings before I inserted the SD card. It went through the compete install software process and was stuck on the loading screen for a good 15 minutes and then I pulled the plug. I have since turned the power back on, and it goes right to the loading screen. I even tried putting the old 4.9 version and 5.4 updates on the SD card to see if it would pick it up, nothing.

Should I keep it plugged in for longer, even after I pulled the power chord after the update because it was sitting on the loading screen?

You might try leaving it on for a while to see if anything changes.  Otherwise you may have to call customer service as this has always been a problem with HB software if the process does not go well. HB pc used to have a restore program for a hung unit but I don't know if it supports the newer products. Sometimes this unit has to be sent in to HB to fix.  Again, just an old problem for HB updates.. The steps to update must be followed exactly or a hung unit can happen.
Call support when they open back up..

I was going to buy the usb chord to hook it up to humminbird PC to try to do the "bootstrap". Its $489 to send it into HB to have it serviced. I would rather buy a new unit.

Yep, the usb cord is a bit costly also.  Repair is costly also.  You might try to talk to customer service and talk about not having a way in the field to conveniently bootstrap a unit. Maybe they will do that for just shipping costs. Sometimes dealers have the cord and can bootstrap for you if they know what they are doing.
This has always been an issue with wish list requests to clean up the process. HB should do something with their restore process code so that field errors can be fixed without sending it in... Chuck

I just purchased the cable to do the bootstrap myself. Going to try that by following this thread...

http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=661.0

Cable will be here next week.

I hate you have to buy the cable.  would be nice if dealers could help with this.  Hope it works out ok and you don't have to send it in.  Do let us know how this all works out...Chuck

Any update on this Champion203?

FYI: You can also try the bootstrap process by using a different software update version on the SD card.  Sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

Greg,

I am still waiting for the cable to come in. They were slow with shipping. Not to happy about it. It will be here Wednesday. 2 weeks after I paid for it.

I tried to bootsrap it with the SD card in it with version 5.4 and 4.9 (It had 4.9 when i locked it up updating it to 6.3) with just the power cable hooked up. It just sits on the loading screen when I try to bootstrap it ( while holding power and view)

Hoping I can fix it with this cable? If not, I cant say I am going to send it in. It will most likely end up as a boat anchor. I just bought it, and I still hafto buy a transducer for it...its a bummer.

well, at this point I do not know what to do. The cable came in this afternoon, and I hooked it up and bootstrapped the unit right away. Everything went smoothly. Updated it through the PC. Completed full progress bar on the computer and on the unit. PC comes up that the update was complete, and the unit says "success". After you click finish when its done on humminbird PC, and the unit goes to restart, it just blinks on the loading screen, and the unit disappears from Humminbird PC. It does not detect it anymore...but if I power it off, unplug it, bootstrap it, it will detect it, until its done. Same thing, over and over again.

I am not sure what to do at this point. I basically threw money away with this unit.

I posted over on BBC & kinda figured that out.
;)
Check with Greg here - there is likely an older version of S/W here and I mentioned to try booting that up.

Best of Luck!

No response.

I talked to humminbird directly yesterday. I shipped it in. I didnt really have any other option. I am hoping it just needed the update for $68.50 and not any internal replacements for $489. I paid $500 just for the head unit a few weeks ago and I never even used it!

I still say dealers should step up to the plate and be able to help with this kind of problem. Simple upgrades should not be related to shipping and delays.  These units are computers and IT folks should be able to help with this problem. Every dealer should have the cable to be able to restore any unit without shipping to the factory. ... Chuck

forget that. By the time I get it back, and spend the $200 to get a transducer I need for it, I could have picked up a nice used 1198.

I sent the unit to humminbird monday and they had it by friday morning.  They called me friday afternoon and said pretty much the unit was useless, but they are giving me a brand new 998 HD for $489.45. I am pretty happy about this. What a great company.

I also asked how long I should expect to receive it. She said she wasnt sure if they had any of the 998's in house so it would be shipped out in 2-4 business days depending on location it comes from.

I called today and asked her what was going on. She said sometimes they deposit back the money until the unit is ready/shipped out. Then they take it back....and I brought it to her attention I even had a confirmation number after I paid and she said that doesnt make a difference.

Never heard of a company doing such a thing. Now she also couldnt give me a time frame on when I will receive or they will ship the new unit.

Pretty confused right now lol
