798ci and 998c HD questions
« on: July 12, 2013, 05:30:44 PM »
Hey guys, Im new here.  Ive got a couple questions.  First all, Ive got a 798ci on my bow on my trolling motor.  Now Im looking at a 998c HD for my main unit at the center console.  Will these two units link together with the proper cables and such?  Next, I see the 998c HD is $2000 while the older 998c SI combo color sonar GPS+WAAS chart plotter is $1500.  The cheaper one actually has higher reviews on bass pro.  Whats the difference and which one should I choose?  Thanks for your help.

1st, Bass Pro is not the place to shop for either unit.....you can do a lot better....Universal Mania for instance.

2nd, if the 798 is not the HD model, the only way to link the 2 units is with the interlink.  It is old technology and I have seen connectivity problem reported with the newer software versions.
If it were me, I would consider selling that 798 and getting an 898....or you could get the 798hd si which has an ethernet connection....then link the units with ethernet.

The only difference between the 2 998 models is that the HD version has an LED backlit display that is brighter with better sunlight visibility.  Your current 798 has better sunlight viewability that the older model 998.

Ive read that humminbird is discontinuing these current units in december or early 2014.  Obviously this is much like buying a computer and the technology gets old FAST.  Has anyone else heard they are doing this so soon and if so does anyone know what they plan to unveil next?  Trying to decide if I should wait until early next year or go with whats out there now.

Well, If they were going to replace the current units you would think they would have announced it at i-cast.

I don't know where all the rumors are coming from.

I've got a 5 year old 997 c SI (with updates) and I still don't use it to it's full capabilities. It may be old technology compared to the new ones but it is still the best fishing tool I ever had. And better than anyone else's.
