Aux Temp/Speed Issue
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:05:29 PM »
This is probably something only Greg can answer. I have a 798ci with the older TG/TSI-6 Aux temp speed connected. While the 798 shows the Aux device attached, it appears to be non functional. First of all is this aux unit compatible with the 798ci? If so why will it not allow me to change and see changes to the temp and speed offset?

Wall-E-Baiter,
The TG/TSI-6 is not compatible with the 798c Si unit but the TS-W is.  Same basic design but different connectors I think (not real sure what the TG/TSI-6 connector looks like).

Thanks Greg

Still not certain why the 798 shows the unit connected but not functioning. I don't mean to be contrary but why will it show the device there if it can't read it? I would think that it would not see it at all ????? I will have to check the cable end to see the actual device model. I took the tg/tsi designation from my records I have in the house. If its of any help this was from a Wide Vision unit.

I just mounted a TS-W unit and connected.  Not sure if the unit is reading it yet though.  Does the 798 automatically detect or convert to the speed wheel?  My older Eagle units allowed me to view both SOG (GPS) as well as the speedwheel.  All I have noticed since I was only able to take it out on the water once was that as usually a GPS speed will jump around at slow trolling speeds, I was assuming the unit was not reading the speedwheel.  Greg, is there a function in the menu that I did not see to adjust this?

XD35,
not sure about the 798, but with my 981 I have to select the paddle wheel manually in the readouts. I assume that's the case with your unit as well.

Go to the settings tab and scroll down to readout select. There you should be able to choose the "speed through water".

Hope this helps

Jolly Roger, Thanks for tip. That makes sense.  I'll check it out when i get home.  I looked in the manual under Accessories and it did not state anything on the SW.

Hi Guys,
I mounted a TS-W (aux temp/aux speed unit) on my boat several years when I did a 797C install. Humminbird does something strange (but logical) that will get you if you are testing the installed setup in the garage - and not on the water! Humminbird (when looking at the "Connected Devices" screen) will (should) show the aux temp as connected but the aux speed as not connected until the paddle wheel is "spinning" - no kidding! Once the head "sees" the both parts as "connected" you can choose them as "select readouts" options.

Take Care,
Roger

rakicker,

Ok,   I actually only bought the speedwheel without Temp since the HDSI transducer already has temp senser.  So what your saying is if my wheel stops moving the GPS speed senser takes over on the unit?  I just found the readout setting Jolly R talked about, there are quit a few options.  Speed and then there is a Speed over Water option.  Going to have to wait to get back on the water to test the settings.  Would like to have both speed readouts available.  Hope it works.

there are two speeds to view.  One is the paddle wheel which is the boat speed in the water, and the other is the the GPS calculated ground speed.  you can select what you want to see on the display.    chuck

Wall-E-Baiter,
The temp/speed gauge for the Wide Vision was the TS-W which has been redesigned since than but yours should still work with your 798 unit.

The paddlewheel accessory (SW or TS-W) will not show as connected until the wheel is spun.  The unit cannot detect that it is connected until it starts receiving the electrical pulses which are generated when the when the wheel spins.

If you want to see GPS speed and the paddlewheel speed you can select both “Speed” (GPS speed) and “Water Speed” (paddlewheel speed) from the Select Readouts menu.

If you have the TS-W connected you can select to read the Temperature (from the transducer) and Auxiliary Temperature (from the paddlewheel) as well.  Some guys even buy a TG-W Temperature Sensor and use it to view the water temperature in their livewell or bait tank.

Just remember that when you select a certain digital readout position to show one of the different Select Readouts selections; that it may not show up in every View as some of these Views have locked digital readout data that is displayed.
