Title: Contour XD Maps
Post by: tennwalkinghorse on February 16, 2010, 01:53:04 PM
Can not find to much info on this new mapping system . Can any one show pictures of the contour map verses the Un - Map system? All so looking to buy the 898cSI unit ,but most of the lacks I fish are very shallow from 1 to 6 ft will the Side imaging and down imaging work at those shallow depths and what is the minimal depth that SI will work at.

wow, if you are fishing lakes in 1 to 6 feet of depth your sonar might not be such of an option.  If these lakes are large in acreage you might be better suited to a gps mapping system with contours. DI and SI will function in as little as 1 foot but not much will be derived from the data.  Down around 6 feet you will get  some definition but again you should be able to see a lot from the surface anyway.  Ok so much for my 2 cents worth.  What do you shallow water fishermen have to say.   chuck

I was going to get the 858c unit ,but was wondering if I would kick myself later  for not upgrading to the SI. I can still use the GPS and 2D sonar on the 898 but was thinking I could benefit from the SI technology , the water is very dirty and weedy in most of the lakes around me.

you might go ahead and get the sonar with the idea you could fish other lakes and find the DI SI benefical for that environment.  chuck.

OK, I am one of those that does a lot of fishing in areas of 6 feet or less.  (Flats of Florida coast.)  To me and IMHO the idea that side imaging is of little use it these depths is just plain wrong.

It may not show you the same king of picture that you see in deeper water, but in these depths, a 6 inch depth change can mean so much, the side imaging will show you not only where the change is but in what direction the runoff goes and in a picture that is unmistakable.  When you are fishing shallow water, this information can be, well, invaluable!

I only have a 797C2, but I am absolutely drooling over a 898C, BUT, don't underestimate just how much info I get from that little 797C2.

Thanks for the feed back George P that's the kind of stuff I've been waiting to hear  I don't mind spending the money if the SI will be of use to me in the shallow water. ;)
