updated software
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:34:41 PM »
I downloaded the latest software from the HB site.  V5.210.  Reset defaults on my 798.  ?Copied the bin file from the download folder on my computer to the SD card..installed into my 798.  Turned on went through the update screens on the 798.  Update completed but now it will not go into simulation mode unless I unplug the SD card with the new software update.  Is that normal?
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

You will want to remove the update from the card.  It will check it each time if you leave it on there.

It should be the file 590321-1_v5_210.bin or the one with the .bin extension

as a hint .....only have the install on the on the card by itsself.  do not have other data....also once the install is succewssful. ......remove the update.  You can save the update to your computer......
for another time...or elsewhere...

FWIW: Most people have some old, small capacity SD cards that are not being used anymore.  I use an old standard (slow) speed Sandisk SD card for S/W updates.  That is its only purpose.   That way, you don't have to go through the file erase from you HC recording SD chip.   It also provides confidence that the chip has done numerous S/W installs without incident.
If it bends my rod, I'm a happy fisherman.

I keep 5 SD card with my unit at all times...

1 for current version of SW...
1 for previous version of SW...
1 for all my waypoints backed up...
1 with previous recordings of previous fishing trips...
1 for today's snapshots and recording that I may make....

SD cards are cheap...
