797 EMC disturbance
« on: September 15, 2012, 05:29:29 AM »
Hi

My VHF radio (when transmitting) and the Wiper is disturbing the SI signal.

I like to try to filer with a ferrite.

Is it better to fiter on the Humminbird power cable  or on the VFH/Wiper cable ?

Hello Göteborg!  :)
I have been tought one should eliminate as close the source as possible. This would mean putting ferrites on the power cables as close the wiper and the radio as possible and prevent the power cables from acting like antennas. The radio must of course operate as intended so ferrites on the antenna cable is not a good idea. If the VHF signal still interferes with the sonar I think ferrites on the sonar power cable and the transducer cable might help. These ferrites should be located close the head unit. (You will need a substantial number of ferrites...). Other means are routing of sonar wires far from other wires, perpendicular crossing with other wires, coiling excess transducer cable sections in a figure 8 pattern and, most important of all, feeding the sonar with a separate battery that does nothing else.
