Title: 1198 & 898 Ethernet
Post by: cooter on June 19, 2011, 03:42:55 PM
Trying to Ethernet my 1198 with my 898. I have both of them with the up to date software. Both are showing the Network Screen. 1198 is on the Console with a GPS Puck mounted right above the Transom Mounted Transducer, and 898 on the Bow with a GPS Puck mounted right above the Trolling Motor.

QUESTION:

Shouldn't I be able to switch the Console 1198 and read the Bow Puck, and Vice-Versa, Bow 898 and read the Back Puck. I am not seeing the 898 Network info on the 1198. From watching the instructional CD, I should be able to see the Bow Puck on either unit, and click on which ever Puck I want.

I am seeing each Unit on their own Network Screen, but nothing that would allow me to select back and forth. Also does not put a waypoint on both units, when I mark a waypoint on either. What and my not doing ?  ?  ?  ?

I have both units and had to update to the 5.5 software. You also have to select which puck and transducer you want from the network tab. Marking a waypoint saves that waypoint on that unit, it does not automatically add it to the other. I periodically export my waypoints to an SD card and add them to the other head so all the waypoints match and are saved on each head....Im running the 898 and 1198 connected by Ethernet, 2 GPS pucks and a single SI transducer connected to the 898 and shared through network...

Add: Both units have a different update, although they are 5.5 they are different. Make sure you use a fresh SD card and download the right software for each unit

I have the correct Up-Dates on each unit. I have a SI Transducer on The Transome, and Trolling Moter. Each unit will only show the Puck that is hooked up to that unit. When I go to Network, then GPS, it only shows the Puck that is hooked up directly to that Unit. Doesn't give you a choice of the front Puck, and the Bow unit doesn't give you a choice of the Transom Puck.

The Instructional CD shows that they have 2 External Pucks, and an Internal unit to choose from. Mine only shows the puck that is hooked directly to that unit.

I thought the Istructional CD says that the waypoint should show up on both units. I thought I read that the unit that actually MARKS the waypoint is the normal BLUE, and the other unit should show BLUE with a different color ring around the blue dot. Maybe not, So many things going on with this, I am totally lost.

TAKEN FROM CD:
Note that waypoints being shared from another unit
will have a green ring around them. In this example,
the blue waypoints are from the local unit.

Waypoints will show up on each unit yes, sorry if I explained it wrong. The difference is shared VS stored. If I go out with only one unit, ONLY the waypoints stored on that unit will be visible. Thats why I use the SD card so each unit has the exact same waypoints rather then just shared when connected by Ethernet.

Ok, I understand that. But like a few minutes ago, I went out turned both units on, MARK a way-point on one of my units, and it didn't register to the other. Deleted it, went to other unit, MARK and the other didn't register it. Have checked connection several times.

Very frustrating to have $4000 in humminbirds, and they don't work together. Still working on it, I'm sure it is just something I haven't done correctly.

Cooter take your time and read this I think it will help. Gary http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=2052.msg11267#msg11267 (http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=2052.msg11267#msg11267)

I was frustrated at first myself, but mine ended up being a software issue thats why I had to update to the 5.5....Like Gary said take your time, we all want everything right now, but networking can at times be a task....I'm sure the folks here will help you and all will be good....I use my a little different as far as waypoints so my help will be limited. My units are right next to each other on my console, mainly because I wanted to have a larger screen for navigation running out, then switch to the larger 1198 to see SI and sonar once at the location.

It will be something simple hopefully

Cooter,
Disconnect the Ethernet cable and try loading an older version of software into each unit.  Than re-download a copy of the 5.500 software and update both your 898 and 1198 units.  Reconnect the Ethernet cable and try them again.

Where do I get a older version. All i am seeing in the Humminbird Web Page (My Account) is 5.5 for both of them.

Seems like there is some on this site for the 898, but nothing for the 1198.

Keith,
Direct e-mail me and ask for an older version of software for your 1198 unit.  If I receiver it before 2:00pm today I can go ahead and get it to you quickly.  Otherwise you may have to wait for tomorrow (I have a class to teach at 2:00 - 5:00 pm).

Greg,

Thanks Very Much... It seemed to have worked. I am able to read the Transducer, and GPS Puck from each unit now. Thanks Again. Hope to test it tomorrow.
