Hi, new to the forums and the 998, just waiting for delivery.

Went with the thru-hull transducer and would be interested in any feedback, tip or tricks prior to the install/setup

You can use the search tab at the top to help.
A couple of recaps:
1) use a good epoxy (referenced in several previous posts)
2) Dont epoxy until you have deterimed the final location
3) take your time as once epoxied it is somewhat permanent

The FAQ, though, seems to contradict itself;

What are the mounting options for the side imaging transducer?
There are three mounting options for the side imaging transducer. They are:
1.transom mount (this transducer comes standard with the 797,  997 and 1197)
2.trolling motor mount (adapters to allow the transom mount transducer to be mounted to the trolling motor are sold separately) 
3.plastic thru-hull transducer (offered as an optional accessory

Can I epoxy the side imaging transducer in the hull of my fiberglass boat and allow the sonar to shoot through the hull?
No. Because of the way the side imaging beams shoot out to the side the transducer can’t be epoxied into the hull and work properly.

Doesn't point 3 in the 1st question contradict the answer in the next question ?  or is it a matter of how well it works ?

And if I bought the CHO package then I'm not going to get an SI transducer am I ?

no, there's n o contradiction. The plastic through hull transducer is a "break through" transducer. This means you have to drill a hole into your hull and the transducer will stick out under your boat. This is the HDSI through the hull transducer:

In some of the posts here it is referred to shoot through the hull transducer. But these transducers are only for the 2D (downlooking) sonar in combination with a second (or third) Side Image transducer. This set up is used to avoid loosing depth reading at high speed which might occur with some type of hull or if the regular SI transducer is mounted too high at the transom.

This transducer now can be epoxied inside the hull, but only on single layer fiber glass hulls. It is connected via a Y-cable to the head unit and provides the downlooking sonar signal while the SI transducer provides the Side Image signals.

Yes, if you ordered the "CHO" (control head only) package, you will not get a transducer at all and you will have to get a transducer separately.

Just got home and opened the box, it's even nicer in person !  This is going to be great.  Install Thursday, I think I might be unwell on Friday !!

It is like Christmas and a birthday all in the same package.  when you get the install finished,.. take some installation pictures and post for us to see.

Few snaps taken via Humviewer, performance seems pretty good but I have no real basis for that opinion.
