SD Card Reader
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:53:07 PM »
Please Help!

When trying to export data from my 898c to a SD card the unit fails to recognize the card. I have tried numerous cards and even downloaded he SDFormatter software to reformat all cards and still no luck. The write protect tab is 'unlocked'. I have tried a SDHC Panasonic 4GB, A SD Verbatim 2GB and another SD 2GB with no joy. Ive tried both slots with and without the Navionics map inserted. The unit WILL download waypoints from any of the cards mentioned and is recognized on the diagnostics page of the 898. In summary the unit accepts data from the card but fails to write to the card.

Any ideas?

Could be a bad sd card unit. Have you talked to HB customer support?

Thanks Chuck, I did call them Friday and they suggested trying different cards. With that test complete I will be calling them back next week, bummer over Xmas!

Maybe you should try copying any data from your computer to your card, just to make sure your card(s) will accept the data.
Then just erase the data leaving a blank card.  To date I have never formatted my cards.  If you can record on the card(s) they should be good.

If you are still not sure, purchase another Sandisk card at Walmart and use it without doing anything to it, it should work.

Put the card back in your machine an try to record on it by getting to the "Snap Shot and Recording" screen, hit the Menu button and start recording the unit will tell you if it is recording, then you must hit the menu button again and stop recording before shutting the unit down, otherwise "End of File" will not be recorded and the recording is rendered invalid.

Thanks George,

I will try your suggestion of erasing all data from my card and seeing if the unit will write to it clean. If that fails I will get another new sandisk card (any particular criteria?) and install into the unit new out of the pack and see if the unit will write to it.

Very frustrating!

Dags,
I believe that the read and write lines on SD memory cards are separate.  If so, than it would mean that you either have several bad SD memory cards or both SD reader/writer slots in your unit are bad in the same specific way.  In your first post you stated: “The unit WILL download waypoints from any of the cards mentioned and is recognized on the diagnostics page of the 898”, so you have already tested that you can write to the memory cards from your computer – that leaves the memory card slots in your 898c Si as being bad…  Call the Humminbird folks to get your unit in to be fixed.
