Ethernet connecting two units
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:12:16 PM »
Hi all,

Just need a little confirmation of what I have read.

I have an 1197 SI unit. I block my wife from seeing this unit (no, not intentionally). I couldn't mount this unit on my dash as the windshield prevents it. I had to put the RAM mount on the gunnel. I block her line of sight.

She wants her own display. How can I argue with that. I get to buy another graph!

From what I can find, to share sonar data, I need to purchase a like feature graph to be completely compatable. While I would like another 1197 or 1198, one is already overkill for my abilities. Looks to me as if the 798 is the cheapest SI type unit I can use with my graph. This should give my all features of my present unit plus give me a second transducer which could work as a backup. I could run two ethernet cables, one to the passenger side of the boat and one to the bow. That would give me the fexiblity to run that unit in either position.

Have I got this correct? Also, can either unit drive the transducer and the other unit just display the data? I guess that would imply that the unit driving the sonar must be directly connected to the transducer, right? Just thinking the 798 can be a backup for the sonar portion of the 1197 if it decides to quit working on the water (been there, done that already).

Thanks for your time and knowledge!!!

   Kevin

Gee Kevin, I would think that your Wife was worth at least an 898c Si unit!  LOL!

Yes the 798ci HD Si unit (make sure it is one of the “HD” model 798 units as we have made several models) can be Ethernet connected to your 1197c Si unit by using one Ethernet cable.  The 798 could than display all of the sonar information from the 1197 unit except for the 800kHz Si sonar as the 798 does not have this capability.  The 1197 would drive the HDSi transducer and so it would need to be powered on for the 798 to be able to see and display the sonar data you are seeing.  The 798 could also be used as a back up unit if you also install its CSi transducer.

The third Ethernet connected unit at the bow is a show stopper right now though as there is only one Ethernet connection on the 1197 unit.  There is no Ethernet Y-cable either but we will be coming out with a five position Ethernet router box at the end of this calendar year (called AS-ETH PS I think) that will allow up to five Ethernet capable units/accessories to be connected.  You could go ahead and get the unit and run the cable now but would have to wait on the Ethernet box to connect it.

Thanks Greg! It may have to be a 898 so I can get the same transducer.

The router sounds like a great idea. I was just thinking I would switch cables on the 1197 depending on which position the other graph was at.
